Firstly, thanks for all the messages, much appreciated - and maybe nobody worked it out or you were too polite to say it - but if I was 17 in 1973 and that's 43 years ago - I am now 60. Suddenly, I feel very mortal. And PompeyPhil - as to the farting competition, probably a bit of both but at least I won the single bed!
4th February 1967
Football League, Division II
Att: 17,695
Crystal Palace 2 (Woodruff, Bannister), Plymouth Argyle 1
An unusual image from this match today. The narrative goes:-
"BRIDE AND GROOM GO TO FOOTBALL MATCH FROM RECEPTION - CRYSTAL PALACE V PLYMOUTH. Mr & Mrs John Suter, who were married this afternoon, came straight to the Crystal Palace ground with their bridesmaids and guests from the reception for the match. John and his wife have never missed a Palace home game" (I ask - how old must they be as CPFC started in 1905?!). "PHOTO SHOWS - the bride in white, holding the groom's hand, line up with other guests and bridesmaids for the start of today's game."
I have tried to contact the Suters on social media without success. If anyone reading this can help me find them, I would be delighted. |

Many years ago, I started to collect programmes from Division III North as that was one division Palace had never played in. I didn't get anywhere near completing that project but one in the collection appears today:-
4th February 1956 (I was one day old)
Football League, Division III North
Att: 6,790
York City 1, Workington 1

70 years ago (1945/6 season) and an FA Cup 4th Rd replay between Blackpool and Middlesbrough.
The 45/6 season competition had 2 legged ties and the sides were level after the games at Bloomfield Road and Ayresome Park.
This replay was held at Leeds United’s Elland Road stadium where Middlesbrough won the tie 1-0.
The programme is a 4 page issue with notes on the first 2 pages, team line-ups on page 3 and a full page advert for Bedford trucks on page 4.

5th February 1974
FA Cup, 4th Round, 2nd Replay (at Selhurst Park)
Att: 19,595
Portsmouth 2 (Kellard, Davies), Orient 0
After 2 spells at Palace, and in his second term at Fratton Park, Bobby Kellard scored for Pompey
And there were 4 recent former Palace stars in the O's line-up:-
John Jackson, Phil Hoadley, David Payne, Gerry Queen
... which is probably why I went to this game. |

50 years ago today
5th February 1966
Alfreton Town v Heanor - Midland Counties League
Don't know the score in this one but assume with Michael Jackson on the cover it must've been a Thriller!
Doesn't look like the referee is very highly thought of either

67 years ago (1948/9 season) and a Central League fixture between Bolton Wanderers reserves and Blackpool reserves.
The programme is a 6 page gate-fold style issue with notes, fixtures, league tables, team line-ups and a half time scoreboard.
I don’t have a score recorded for this one so if anyone knows please drop me a PM.

Value for money at Old Trafford 50 years ago today.
A first division fixture, of course.
Manchester United 6 (Connelly, Law 2, Charlton 3)
Northampton 2 (Moore, Martin)
att: 35,273
"Can the Cobblers succeed where Benfica failed?" wrote one local journalist.....well, no, but the crowd appreciated the visitors' willingness to attack and not park the bus.

56 years ago today - but here, unlike today, everyone left Anfield early.
Match abandoned ("due to fog" in my notes)

46 years ago today and one of the most iconic matches of the seventies.
7th February 1970 FA Cup 5th Round. Attendance 27,771
Northampton Town 2 Manchester United 8
George Best returned from a four week suspension (for knocking the ball out of the referees hands) and scored six goals.
Northampton's keeper Kim Book is reported to have said "our plan was to stop Bobby Charlton, nobody mentioned George Best!"

68 years ago today.
FA Cup 5th Round
Middlesbrough 1 (Spuhler)
Derby 2 (Harrison, Stamps)
att: 43,000
4 page programme issued which includes an advert for an overnight return coach trip to London for 35/6d.... "meals arranged".
I'm intrigued by the latter as these were before the days of motorway cafes and I can't see them cooking up 50 meals on a gas ring at the back of the coach.
I wonder how they worked it?
