Dammit, foiled again.

Bit relieved actually - the charabanc's still in at the garage after negotiating the potholes to visit Newport at Christmas. Driving

19th February 1898 - Ryde v Cowes friendly at Partlands. Result not to hand (but I'll try and dig it out).

Large, four page programme with a decent section of notes and some brilliant adverts. Not bad value for your ha'penny.

A year earlier Cowes had been crowned the first ever champions of the Hampshire League, a year later they were about to embark on an ill-fated venture into the Southern League that pitted them against the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Brighton and Bristol Rovers, albeit only for half a season.

What a belter! Nice one yachtsmun.

84 years ago (1931/2 season) and a 1st Division fixture between Arsenal and Blackpool.

The programme is a very good 12 page issue full of reading and just a small advert for the Finsbury Park Empire.

Arsenal won 2-0 with goals from Jack and Parkin.

20th February 1990

Leeds United v Derby County

Central League A4 single sheet

Just one for Steve to glance at really and for others to perhaps note the future of Derby's intelligent no.7 'Brain' McCord...

http://www.independent.co.uk/s.....15401.html

20th February 1965

Blackburn Rovers v Preston North End

Friendly between Div1 Blackburn and Div2 Preston, both clubs without a game due to not making the FA Cup 5th round

S/S printed on both sides

46 years ago (1969/70 season) and a Division 2 fixture between Bolton Wanderers and Blackpool.

This was Blackpool’s promotion season back to the top flight after relegation in 1967, although before this game they were only sitting in 7th position but with games in hand.

Blackpool won 2-0 with goals from John Craven and Fred Pickering.

The programme is a 12 page issue with rather a lot of adverts but also with plenty of reading as well.

The programme includes details of A and B team fixtures between the two clubs which helps with my research into this level of the game.

52 years ago (1963/4 season) and a 1st Division match between Blackpool and Burnley.

The programme increased in size this season from 8 pages to 12 pages and there was also a dramatic change to the cover from the normal blue on white.

The content was basically the same but the extra pages allowed more notes, photos of previous games and a quiz.

The match ended 1-1 with John Green scoring for the Seasiders.

This day in 1947.

Middlesbrough 1
Derby 0

att: 32,612

Surprising how much Boro' manage to fit into this programme.
Notes by "Captain Jack", "Snappy Pars From All Parts" (whiich tells us that Sir Stanley Rous had decreed that, despite the foul winter, the season wouldn't be extended by even a week, let alone any longer) and a page of press clippings on the home team's recent game with Bolton.

Couple of great adverts, too....."Garnett's Won-Up, the ideal shandy gaff" (whatever that may be) and the fact that "no points were required" to buy Thor's cough drops. I presume that had something to do with post-war rationing.

A splendid, if understated, programme. Great value for a penny.

Not, of course, that Stanley Rous was a "Sir" back in 1947.

Don't know why I typed that.

Word association, I suppose.
