The previous season's 6-1 hammering by Boston United in the Cup is the one everyone remembers.
But 12 months later, New Brighton, now a non-league club, won 3-1 at the BBG and, as was the case with the Boston game, not a mention of the setback in the next home programme. Or the one after. Or ever.
23,144 in attendance. Reg Ryan scored for Derby.
I must replace this one at some point. I didn't punch those holes. Honest.

65 years ago (1950/1 season) and an 8 page programme for a Central League fixture between Blackpool reserves and Bury reserves.
The match ended in a 1-1 draw.

"Finchley goalie R. Barham goes high up in the air to make a save in his team's match with Crystal Palace, as fog thickens on the field. The fog enveloping a great part of London finally won its match with soccer, and caused the postponement of the Arsenal-Preston match and other tilts". Palace player thought to be Johnny Rainford.

Finchley 3 (Robb, at least 1) Crystal Palace 1 (Thomas) (again)

The Palace "defence" is breached by a shot from Finchley's Tottenham & England winger, George Robb, who succeeds in penetrating the bandy legs of Palace No 3 Harry McDonald. Incredibly, 11 months later, Robb was in the England team slaughtered by the Hungarians. How did that happen?

Allders of Croydon was the country's 3rd largest department store and was the focal point of Croydon from 1862 until liquidation in 2013. If you wanted anything from clothing to white goods, from curtains to carpets, you'd go there first and if they didn't have it, you'd go somewhere else.
17th January 2013 was one of Croydon's saddest days - and there have been a few of those. RIP. |

This a Blackpool Central League single sheet from 1960/1 season, the 2nd full season of this style as opposed to the standard 8 page programmes issued for 1st team games.
Opponents were Derby County and the match ended 2-2.
Attendance was 1572.

From the 30s up until the mid 70s, the Charlton programme had a "personality" like no other. Part of it was the design, part of it was the dry wit the editorial often utilised.
It's a shame today's programmes are, more or less, corporate marketing mouthpieces, isn't it?
Anyway, 66 years ago
Charlton 1 Derby 3 (Tim Ward, Jack Stamps, Billy Steel)
att: 30,153
And The Valley had the best bank of terracing known to man....wonder what happened to that tree at the top of it??

This is a scarce single sheet from 1967/8 season between Blackpool and Chorley in a Lancashire Senior Cup replay.
The FL teams competing in this competition around the late 60s and early 70s were made up mainly of reserves, whereas non-league teams who participated usually played their full strength X1. This resulted in some ‘shock’ results and this tie was no exception.
The match finished 2-2 as did the first tie and Chorley went on to win the 2nd replay 2-1.

Some nice programmes and their covers on show........
Then up pops a boring old Blackpool 'home made' single sheet!
Only kidding!
Haven't got the access needed at present to my lot, for scanning, although it was nice of Pete to show a nice Brentford home programme from the 1950's. _________________ Not Forgotten; Allwright, Greechan, Hagan, Kennedy, Littler, Purver, Robotham, Saunders, Shields |

Not much to look at admittedly but one of a number of very scarce Lancashire Senior Cup programmes from this era.
I think the last one I noticed on auction went for over £40. |

72 years ago, single sheet issue from the game at White Hart Lane between Arsenal and West Ham United.
Was given this many years ago at school by a mate along with a few others inc. Chelsea v Spartak friendly from 1945, but I gave them all back when my dad said that he didn't think it was right to swap 1940s programmes for Sheffield United Division 4 programmes from 1981.
He had a point, my mate's dad said he'd no idea that his son had took them, and thanked me for returning them. He gave me a couple of single sheet Arsenal programmes (this being one of them) as a thank you.

A particularly stunning front cover from a club who year after year produced a programme many other clubs (mine included) should have looked up to as an example of what could be done.
Hull 1 Derby 1 (Jesse Pye)
att: 16,472
This was the Rams' 21st league match of the season.
The half-way stage.
They would record only 2 wins in the following 21 matches (including a last day of the season victory. against...Hull) and end up relegated to the Third Division North.

We played then today - we played them 56 years ago today, too.
At least we got a point today (though that was never a penalty at the end!)
Brighton 2 Derby 0 (att: 11,903)
Also thought I'd slip in an unusual issue from an FA Vase tie from Dec 12th 1981. Very basic, no-frills programme. I don't think they were used to having to issue one.
Newhall United 0 West Midlands Police 3
Furthest the home club (from Derbyshire) had (or have) ever got in the Vase.

63 years ago (1952/3 season) and a 1st Division fixture between Stoke City and Blackpool.
A very good 12 page programme was issued including 2 pages on the opponents and an article entitled ‘Stoke Snapshots’ which featured John Sellars.
Stoke ran out comfortable winners by 4 goals to nil.
