I am trying to build up a collection of Sunderland home programmes 1940s and early 1950s but I’m getting really frustrated with the wild fluctuation in prices. In particular anything v Spurs. A 1951/52 copy just sold for £100 on Ebay and now a 1954/55 copy is a crazy £50 with five days to go. Manchester United I can understand but why Spurs? I’ve also seen games v Charlton and v Leicester go for £60 plus. Then on other days I see 1950/51 v Liverpool for less than £20. I guess the thing is not to get caught up in silly bidding and just be patient and hope prices drop at a later date.

Spurs v Derby 52/53 went for £114 the other day on eBay. It's normally hard to get hold of because it was postponed twice and rearranged on a Thursday afternoon with an attendance of only 14,000.

Not always... I bought 4 mid 30s Spurs a while back for £80 - separately purchased and none above £25. When I decided later that I didn't want them I sold them on eBay and barely got the original payment back...

So, my view is they don't spend unless it's 60-1. Plenty of other teams pre-war stuff goes for a lot more.

A few years ago chelsea were the money club when it came to programme prices.

Selling prices are dictated by the supply and demand, unfortunately for yourself Sunderland are a well collected club, where the programmes from early 50s and 40s are not exactly common.

Spurs in my opinion are the best collected club alongside Man Utd, hence the higher than average prices their collectors pay, also they are a London Club, where in general people have more disposable income.

My club Blackburn are one of the poorest collected in the PL, but they are very hard to get hold of in the early 50s and 40s, they usually fetch good money due to the away club interest. Recently an Arsenal collector has started to collect Rovers programmes and the market has gone silly.

As always do not pay more than you can afford and dont get carried away when you see Rovers v sunderland 47/48 on Ebay.

I think a lot of the Spurs collectors just go for the post war set Home/away and they don't bother with the pre-war issues, i have seen some Spurs reserves/youth programmes from the 60's & 70's go for 10 ten times more than league issues from the 1920's, most Spurs pre-war are just set prices and readily available whereas say Blackburn, Leeds, Middlesborugh & Sunderland v Spurs 1940's might only turn up in some cases once every few years & the spurs collectors with the biggest wallets will always bid for them even if they already have it & up the price to near what they paid,

It's amazing what people do collect. Not only are Spurs one of the most collectable away teams post war pre 1960, but the games at their ground, including schoolboys and representative games from the 1950's someetimes go for astonishing prices - sometimes even the equivalent of pre war F.A.Cup Final programmes. Their youth team games at White Hart Lane and elsewhere are also hugely collectable, as are Spurs reserves aways at non league grounds, "A" team programmes ditto.
It's a huge gap to fill with very few programmes around due to the relatively small attendances involved at the time.
It's not only Spurs though who are "very" collectable. Check out programmes involving Grimsby Town from the 40's and early 50's against the normally well collected clubs of the same season.

I've noticed that Burnley v Spurs programmes from the 60s always sell for more than for programmes involving Burnley against other teams.

As do Burnley's 59-60 programmes for obvious reasons.

The old working class towns of Lancashire are probably more expensive to buy than the majority of "bigger" teams.

I said on a thread a few weeks ago that Tottenham aways are the most expensive at Bolton. On Sunday the 53/54 programme sold for £112.The 50/51 and 55/56 are others that are selling for over £100.The earliest that regularly sells in good condition for under £50 is the 56/57 one.
For £112 I think that all 9 Bolton v Arsenal programmes from 50/51 - 58/59 could be bought. It's quite strange that the two North London giants have such different programme prices.
I'd be interested to see what prices the 4 Bury v Tottenham programmes from 46/47 - 49/50 attract.Rarer than the 50s Bolton issues i would have thought.
