I have put this observation under a new thread but it could quite easily have continued "The game's gone mad thread".
17 live matches on TV today.
Includes games from England, Wales, Spain, Italy, France, Holland, Portugal and the African Cup of Nations.
This must be some kind of record. |

It was only as recently as Jan 1974, wasn't it, that the FA were brave enough to allow some Cup games to take place on a Sunday.
From memory, there was some convoluted ruling about entrance fees for a Sunday - clubs had to issue a teamsheet on the day as well as a programme and the entrance fee was linked to the supply of the teamsheet. _________________ http://www.flickr.com/photos/derby1884/sets/ |

It was all to do with the 3 day week and the suspension of floodlit games to save on electricity consumption.
At that time they couldn't charge an entrance fee so included it in the cost of a programme or team sheet.
There is an article here.

I'm not surprised gates doubled for the first ever Sunday games. I remember Sundays in the 1970s as mind numbingly boring. |

The Big Match with Brian Moore followed by a quick dash to the rec with jumpers for goalposts until it was dark. Bliss. |

I think 22 is the most i've counted on TV on a Sunday this season, there's usually A-League and Bundesliga games on BT Sport, but neither league had games this weekend. |

John Player League cricket on BBC2 in the afternoons followed by Arthur Montford's "Scotsport"
Monty Python and Colditz on BBC1 in the evenings.
Or so my 1975 diary tells me. _________________ http://www.flickr.com/photos/derby1884/sets/ |

The most exciting thing ever was when the ice cream van visited the street. I hated Sundays for ever Well at least till shops were allowed to open, pubs opened all day , football and of course , in the early 1980s Bullseye.

At least the prizes were useful (a power drill, a set of fish knives etc).
Not like the tat Bruce and Anthea purveyed on their conveyor belt of a Saturday night.

and don;t forget the "star prize" of a speedboat between two unrelated mates!
best ever out takes are from Bullseye:
Jim Bowen: John, it says on my card that you're a fisherman, what do you fish for?
John: Fish, Jim...
Jim Bowen (looking right down the camera): I can't do this anymore, f&*^ing morons... |

3 classic comedies made their debut in 1974.
Porridge
Rising Damp
It Ain't Half Hot Mum
And 2 more in 1975
Fawlty Towers
The Good Life
They don't make them like those anymore. |

Couple of queries about the 1966 World Cup to tie in with this thread:
-other than the Final itself, were the earlier rounds shown "live" on TV or was it highlights only?
-always wondered why no programmes were produced for the individual matches (other than the Final). Anyone know why not? Would have made a very collectable set! _________________ http://www.flickr.com/photos/derby1884/sets/ |

Yes all the games were on TV, I remember Korea being 3 - 0 up on Portugal and then losing 5 - 3, Pele being kicked all over the park in the group matches, but I could never remember who won it that year. |

BBC and ITV shared coverage using the same pictures.
Most games were live except games being played simultaneously.
I think coverage of one or two games may have started after kick off. |

I quite forgot that I have a Radio Times for the opening week of the World Cup '66.
Here's the lineup for July 11th on BBC1:
4-45: Jackanory (read by Stratford Johns)
5-00: Blue Peter (Christopher Trace, John Noakes, Valerie S)
5-30: Laurel & Hardy
5-50: The Adventures of Tin Tin
6-00: The News
6-30: United!
6-50: Opening Ceremony
7-30: England v Uruguay
9-20: The News
930: The Defenders
10-20: Twenty Four Hours
10-50: Suivez La Piste (French classes!)
11-20: The weather and Closedown
The rest of the week had one game live and "up to the minute reports" on those being played simultaneously.
live games that week on BBC1 were:
July 12 - Bulgaria v Brazil
July 13- Mexico v France
July 14- no match
July 15- Hungary v Brazil
According to this issue, there was NO live radio commentary, which surprises me... _________________ http://www.flickr.com/photos/derby1884/sets/ |
