Hi all,

Regards,

I guess it depends on the opponents. If you (or anyone else) has Newport v Derby County 1945/46 then I'd pay a good price for it - I've never seen it advertised anywhere

Just lloking through my own collection and notice that I paid £110 for the Derby home programme, with team changes.

Unfortunately, I don't have a spare.

Brentford is the hardest from that season closely followed by Chelsea.

The Chelsea programme tends to raise its head at least once a year, and regularly achieves at least £1200. I would have thought that both Fulham and Brentford would fetch £300 a piece.

I paid £35 for that one back in 1997.
Don't see it very often so I'd say that's reasonably good value.

I read the two clubs also met in a friendly match that season at Newport though a) I have no proof of that and b) certainly never seen a programme!

That's interesting, can you remember where you read it as I'm not aware of this and have undertaken quite a bit of local research including reference material at the libraries.

Going back a bit but it may have been while I was doing some research at Derby public library, early 80s.
Interestingly, the date I have the friendly played in October 26th, 24 hours before they played the actual league match.

Not much help, I know, but a date is a good starting point.

Let me know if you find out anything further, could you? Thanks.

They played in a friendly at the end of 1938/9 as I recall.

May be confusion with that?.

Cheers,

John

Well I don't have it in my collection nor do I have the league one for the same year - do you have a copy for sale?

I see that this programme is shown in the Datasport book of Wartime Football with the caption 'A very rare programme. Believed to be the only one issued during the war period'.

Unfortunately there is no season quoted and the match is not recorded in the lists of friendlies.

Looking at another book 'Soccer at War' by Jack Rollin, and the Newport squads for 1939/40 and 1945/6, it would seem the programme is more likely to be from 1939/40 season.

Well I don't see how this could be 39/40 as the handbook advert in programme says complete results 1919-20 to 1939-40, ergo it must be at least a season after this. The team line up has 5 of the team which played Spurs 31/8/39 their last game in the then 2nd division so their promotion team was a bit decimated. We know that County played in the wartime 2nd 45/6 and the writing refers to going back to that division. I would guess at 44/45.

All

It's definitely Xmas Day 1940' and the game was arranged to help pay the expenses of Plymouth Argyle who had played the last 2 games of the 1939/40 season at Newport on consecutive days and stayed overnight.

County played inn the War League West from October 1939 until June 1940,and the Plymouth game was the last competitive one until 1945/6.

100% sure of these facts.

Regards,

John

As it turns out you were correct that it was not 1939/40 but the query was initially between whether it was 1939/40 or 1945/6.

Based on the Newport squads of those years, and comparing with the programme, it could not have been 1945/6 and without further information would likely have been 1939/40.

The reference to complete results may have just referred to league results (not wartime) thus suggesting Xmas 1939 as the likely season.

BUT slugger is 100% correct that it is was Xmas 1940 as shown on this website
