As my club originally as Newton Heath L & Y R was formed from Railway workers in 1878 and then as financial ruin was about to engulf them found a benefactor and the name was changed to Manchester United in 1902, the railways has always played a strong part in their history.

In days gone by rail travel to football matches in the turn of the century was always by train, no one owned a car unless you were gentry or of independent wealth and the game of football was for the lower classes.

Therefore this post is to invite everyone to submit any railways handbills, train tickets, menu's and anything else that has a railway/football theme for any level of football matches from whenever to current day.

I would like to start off this with the following and hope that we can get lots of images and maybe some interesting stories to go with them:

Good thread, Leslie.

Let me start off with one from the 1905/06 season.

Not exactly a railway poster, but a flyer inserted into a Palace programme over Xmas 1946, advertising rail travel to Newcastle for the FA Cup 3rd round game in January 47.

I've asked often if any Palace fans of today went to the game by this method but haven't tracked anyone down and as years pass I am less likely to. I'd love to hear a first-hand account of what the 30-hour round-trip was like - 11:30pm Friday night departure from Kings X, and return there at 6:05 on Sunday morning. But - arrival Newcastle at 6:19 on Sat morning and departure at 11:14pm - how civilised was that? And how many Brown Ales would have been downed in that time? You can only dream. And all for 50 shillings (including seat reservation and postage!).
That's £2.50 for the youngsters out there. (Probably about a third of a weekly wage packet too).

And here's an actual railway poster for the Palace v Nottm Forest FA Cup 5th round tie, Feb 65.

(It's actually printed in blue ink but FPC said the file was too large, hence it's only b/w here).

This is a ticket for a Blackpool Supporters Club chartered train to Huddersfield on 11th May 1968.

It was a day of incredible emotions.

Last game of the season and a quick return back to the top flight.

Or so we thought as the final whistle went and we had won 3-1.

QPR, the side that could prevent our promotion, had been drawing 1-1 against Aston Villa but in the dying seconds Villa managed to score an own goal and QPR went up with a goal difference of 1.86 to Blackpool's 1.65.

There were many conspiracy theories doing the rounds after that.

The oldest handbill I have seen for a game involving Blackpool is this one against Glossop for a match played at Bloomfield Road on 14th November 1908.

And here is another Manchester United v Aston Villa handbill but this time for the 1957 FA Cup Final.

I note that there are a few handbills for sale at www.sportspages.com but the prices are a little on the high side.

This one is for sale at £60.

Seeing as the post is flagging already, here is something else of interest from the Notts County Supporters Club to keep it moving along....

Didn't want to appear too greedy Leslie by posting too many of mine.

But here is a fold out leaflet for the 1951 Cup Final which has underground and street maps inside.

I don't know how close Derby Railway Station was to the old Baseball ground but there isn't a great deal of time here between the final whistle and the train departing .

September 1953 - presumably the Lincoln supporters had to find their own way to Sheffield in order to avail themselves of this service.

Not a train excursion but a tram excursion.

This is a ticket for a special tram trip from Fleetwood to Blackpool for an FA Cup tie in 1980.

A bus ticket to what is considered to be the greatest game ever played in 99 years at Roker Park.
