In 1976 Chelsea were not quite a big as now. Rovers went to the Bridge on new years day and they issued this 176 x 244mm, 20 page programme that cost 15p.

New Year's Day, 1955 and a Kent League Div.1 fixture between 9th placed Snowdown Colliery and 14th placed Canterbury.

Snowdown won 2-1 to commence an impressive second half to the season which saw them lift the league title.

Reasonable 8 page programme with manager's notes and supporter's club notes penned by "the two regulars" along with a full page tribute to club captain Phil Gormley, an ex-Aldershot half-back.

Apparently Snowdown was one of the worst pits in the country to work down due to the excessively hot conditions. It was nicknamed "Dante's inferno" by the poor sods that had to work down there. Heatstroke was a common malady. It was capped in August 1988.

The football club still exist but under another name and at a much lower level.

A terrible, tragic event Eck that affected all who love football, a programme from the match illustrates the poignancy of it all. Many ordinary people cut down in their prime merely attending a football match
A near neighbor of mine was on the stairway at the time and he saw many terrible injuries. One particular fan had his leg "speared"by a splinterred wooden stair rail and was in a bad way, my neighbor (John)
had just taken a First Aid course and removed his Celtic scarf from his
pocket and made a makeshift tourniquet for the victim whereupon the victim's mate told John in no uncertain terms "get that f##cking thing
off him". John was a 15 year old lad!!!!!!
I do hope there were many incidents of heroism and this piece of
unwanted bigotry was an isolated event.

There are thankfully a lot of heroic stories came out of that, none more than Celtic manager Jock Stein.

77 years ago (1937) and a 2nd Division fixture between West Ham and Blackpool.

Blackpool were 4 points clear at the top of the table and had won the previous 9 matches averaging 4 goals a game.

This result then came as a bit of a shock as they lost by 3 goals to nil.

Perhaps some of the players overdid the New Year celebrations a little.

The programme was 4 pages without any adverts.

Eck, I have no reason to disbelieve John, he's not the type to "gild the
lily", however my knowledge of the event is minimal so I must bow down to your superior knowledge, although he did say he was in a family section at the time, hence the scarf in his pocked. Perhaps the intrusion of time has clouded the issue. One thing is certain, he did attend the match, and the incident seems quite feasible.

1965 and a Amateur Cup 1st round tie away to Ford United at Rush Green which ended 2-2. Four page programme on tissue like paper printed black on white. Ford United changed their name to Redbridge in 2004 having moved to Barkingside's ground four years previously as the Rush Green ground wasn't up to Isthmian (Ryman) League standards.

Season 70/1 saw the 3rd Round of the FA Cup begin a week earlier than usual.

Potential giant-killing avoided here as Derby scrape through 2-1 in front of 15,882.

The 12 page programme was atypical of Chester's issue through the 60s and early 70s, the design changing little throughout those years.

I like it, though. It's quirky. It had character.

And Chester still has the best used record shop in the whole of the UK. "In The Land Of Grey and Pink", it's called. Near the railway station. And any shop that names itself after a Caravan track must be good!

66 years ago (1948) and a 1st Division fixture between Blackpool and Everton.

Blackpool won 5-0 this being their best ever win over Everton.

Goals came from McIntosh and 2 apiece from Dicks and Mortensen.

A standard 8 page programme was issued.

During our 1st season at Twerton Park the pitch was a nightmare. 5 mins of rain and the mud became a foot deep. This game was one of many that was called off. The programme measured 209 x 200mm, had 16 pages and cost 50p.

28 years ago and a fair old way down the non-league pyramid.

As the programme for this game has 36 pages, no advertising, would take about an hour to read as there's so much in it plus, to top it all off, a reproduction of the Nov 1913 programme for the Fulham v Peterborough match, I suspect it may have been produced for the benefit of one of those groundhopper tours that used to be so popular. No mention of that being the case, though.

Either that or it was simply because the Metal Box team manager was a well-known programme dealer (for he was) and he was simply indulging himself.

Not one of my favourite issues.

1936 and a Amateur Cup 1st round proper tie at home to the Royal Army Medical Corps (Aldershot) which ended 4-4 after extra-time. Usual eight page programme printed black on white paper. The replay, a week later, ended in a 5-1 victory for Maidenhead but, alas, I don't have a copy of the programme (if any) produced for that game.
