It has just been announced that the owner of Hull City, Assem Allam, has applied to the FA to change the club's name from the beginning of next season,(if ratified). He says that the new name has greater commercial potential. Some fans who had a banner 'Ciity till we die' have been told to do just that, nice! As a traditionalist I am not in favour of name changes for clubs on the whims of owners. Name changes when a club is liquidated and reformed, Aldershot reborn as Aldershot Town, or Town to City as Swansea did in 1970 is fine. We have seen a few problems with the selling of naming rights for grounds which is also due to the influence of the pound. I wonder whether, always assuming that it is allowed, this will become a trend? Interested to hear other members' views.

Sign of the times, sadly. Nowadays, everything has to adhere to brand marketing theory.
History and tradition only count if they can be factored into the equation.

59 years ago to this very day, Hull City themselves, with a beautifully designed programme cover, showed how the two can be aligned together.

I'd like to think Hull fans would fight this name change as best they can - but does the owner of the club really, and I mean really, care what the locals think?

Bet he doesn't. And I'd like to see what's on their balance sheet under "intangible assets" for brand valuation. Or, more pertinently, the provision that's been made for it.
