Drove over to Liverpool yesterday to view this lot, the only football lot in an antiques/ collectables auction at Cato Crane.

I'd summarise it as follows;

- c100 Liverpool homes 57-82 (mainly 61/2-69/70)

- CWC Final Dortmund v Liverpool (creased)

- Liverpool Cup Finals x 7 (65 - early 80's Milk Cup Final)

- FA Cup Semis, inc. 63 (poor)

- Various Liverpool aways 60's / 70's

- A few other bits and pieces (early 60's and one Everton late 50's)

Total number (c150)

As for condition, the Liverpool homes were GOOD to VERY GOOD but the rest were decidedly AVERAGE/FAIR, rather worn and tired.

It wasn't a huge drive over from Greater Manchester and you take your chances, of course, but as I spotted the lot on a table, my first reaction was that sinking feeling - I've driven over for this?

Thought I might bid on the Net at around the estimate (£30-£50), maybe, at the lower end, ideally.

The lot sold for £185!

What did I miss?

Laughing looks an absolute pile of crap. Must have contained a rare postponed game or something like that to fetch that price.

Indeed, Wullie.

Also, you never know how important something might be to any one individual.

Not suggesting any foul play in the slightest but I think it was one of those lots where the photo actually makes the stuff look better than the reality.

I noticed this silly price also - can only imagine that it had the 64 charity shield in there for it to go that high.

the bundle on the bottom right are Scottish programmes. I can see a Raith, Hibs and Dundee Utd issue with others below.
I suspect this could be the key to the high price Sherlock

You are right, Hibernian.

And there were some Scotland Internationals I forgot to mention above.

But to push up the value to £185?

Are the early 60's issues of those clubs / Scotland that rare / valuable?

Of course, there may have been specific sought after matches.

I think it was the average condition that made me baulk at the final price paid.

Then again, maybe the winning bidder was online and hadn't viewed the lot in the flesh? (or should that be 'in the paper'?)

You missed nothing but the opportunity to be ripped off by Cato Crane. I won't elaborate but they are the biggest auctioneer shysters going. It's very likely they had someone push the price up so you got lucky.
