1947 and a visit to Uxbridge for a Corinthian League fixture which ended in a 2-2 draw. Maidenhead finished 8th, Uxbridge 10th (of 14), Walton & Hersham were the Champions. Eight page unusual sized programme printed red on white.
I wondered if Ickenham Cricket Club ever raised that £1,500 to buy the ground and having looked on their website, it said: The Club made a giant step forward and purchased the ground, which hitherto had been rented from the now defunct Middlesex County Council. The purchase cost the Club the princely sum of £5,000, an absolute fortune. The members dug deep in their pockets and with the help of a loan the purchase was completed. I wonder what the ground is worth now. |

61 years ago (1952) and a 1st Division fixture between West Bromwich Albion and Blackpool.
Albion were lying 4th in the table whereas Blackpool were 6th just 1 point behind.
Blackpool won 1-0 with Mortensen getting the only goal.
Someone has written 3-1 to West Brom inside. Perhaps they’d had too much of the brew shown on the front cover.
The programme was just 8 pages but with a fair bit of reading.

As the cover says - "Copied Right Throughout The Universe"
Exactly 100 years ago today and a friendly match between Hoffmann Athletic and Nunhead.
Large 12 page programme issued costing 1d.
Don't really know what to say about this programme other than it's almost certainly the most eccentric item in my collection.
The publication's size allows plenty space for the advertisers to really wax lyrical about their products and there's some wondrous examples but...
....it's the articles themselves that completely defy description. (First aid to the dead? Hairyplanes in the sky? Has anyone seen our missing orchestra?)
It's more like a very early fanzine, I suppose.
Editor was patently as mad as a badger. Or on LSD.
Wonderful stuff and, as I said, I wish I knew how to adequately describe this one. But I'm at a loss
Happy 100th birthday!

World Cup year (47 years ago) and England entertained Wales at Wembley in a European Nations Cup qualifying match which also doubled as a British Championship fixture.
England won 5-1 with a goal apiece from the Charlton brothers, 2 from Geoff Hurst and an og.
This match was Bobby Moore’s 50th cap and Jack Charlton's 25th.
The programme was a standard 16 page issue.

Tend to agree with you, Bispham, when it comes to what goes on in this forum now. It's all about money, ego and oneupmanship.
It's a hobby. Supposed to be fun. Too many see it as an extension of their own persona.
So, for the few who still come here to share rather than snipe. here's an old programme from this day in 1946.
A programme. A football programme.
What this forum is supposed to be all about.

68 years ago (1945) and a Football League North fixture between Huddersfield Town and Blackpool.
The programme was a 4 page issue with a full page of notes, team line ups, half-time scoreboard, recent results and a few adverts.
No mention of opponents on the front cover though.
Blackpool won 4-2 with goals from Dodds, Mortensen 2 and Hugh O’Donnell.

Yes, there's the equivalent of an FA Cup for postmen.
Here, Falmouth (with a staff of just 50 to choose a team from) had made it through to the first round proper having beaten Exeter, Bournemouth, Plymouth and, finally, Bristol. The latter with a staff of 3,500 to choose a team from.
So a real giant-killiing - and they were rewarded with the use of Falmouth Town's ground for this match against the best that London could put up.
12 page programme issued.

69 years ago (1944) and a Football League North (1st Competitiion) fixture between Halifax Town and Blackpool.
The programme is a flimsy 4 page issue with a full page of notes, team line ups, a fixture list (unusually on the front cover) and a number of adverts.
Halifax won 4-3 with Blackpool’s goals coming from Farrow, Paterson and Tweedy.

Whatever became of City's inside-left?
Well, he helped them to a 2-1 win here, Barry Butlin scoring the Rams' goal.
Unfortunately, someone took the instructions literally and cut the coupon out. Wasn't me.

64 years ago (1949) and a 1st Division fixture between West Bromwich Albion and Blackpool.
This match was abandoned 20 minutes from the end with Blackpool leading 2-1.
Mortensen scored both Blackpool’s goals and Elliott scored from the penalty spot for West Brom.
The abandonment was due to bad visibility and the programme for the rearranged game says ‘there can be few here today to say exactly how these goals were scored’.
The programme is a standard 8 page issue.

1955 and the kind of tie that, had wall-to-wall satellite TV been around back then, would have had the cameras there smelling a giant-killing act.
9,818 crammed into Millfields and saw quite a game. Derby took a two goal lead but back came Crook (winners of the FA Amateur Cup the year earlier) to equalise before half-time.
Crook probably should have won it when they were awarded a penalty in the second half but their centre-half Davison put the ball wide.
4 page programme issued, the only reading material criticising "a certain national newspaper" who had questioned the home team's credentials to be playing at such an exalted level.
The Derby issue for the replay showed how nonsensical that outlook was, heaping praise upon Crook for their efforts on the day.
Hard to find programme nowadays. Very hard to find indeed.
