Good man. Although, if my memory serves me well, are they not reluctant to fully describe any faults, if at all? Caveat emptor.......

I went and thought their auctioneer Robert Lee was amazing - a true entertainer in this field, if such a thing is possible.

Went through nearly 700 lots with a few short breaks for a drink or two and phenomenal enthusiasm and drama with nice touches of humour on EVERY lot even the ordinary ones.

Just before bringing the hammer down, he'd sit back and his eyes would dart left and right, looking for that final bid, before bringing the hammer down as if it were the one and only lot he was selling.

As the lots progressed, I realised his eyes reminded me of one of those Terry Gilliam cartoons from Monty Python back in the late 1960's.

There were 120 Military lots before the football began and there were a few strange sights of blokes walking through the car park with bags of items and swords sticking out over their shoulders.

Mind you, I'm sure the Military fans would say the same things about the Sports collectors as other similarly dressed blokes walked out with bags of gold clubs sticking out everywhere and also one guy who had a huge fishing rod and one with a net which looked like a floppy lacrosse bat.

Yes he's a good lad is Rob, I was there for the whole auction and yes the old man was one of those with bayonets, and knives in the car park.

No doubt he was a Blades fan.

Its good to hear about a good auctioneer, they are thin on the ground.
I went to an auction a few months ago and the auctioneer was so slow soft speaking and boring one or two went to sleep.

If we both go again (I'll be at the next one), let's say hello, Sharrowblade.

PS Or do we already know each other? I was wearing the blue shorts and grey tracksuit top.

3rd row, left side of the aisle but on the far right hand side seat (i.e. next to the aisle).

I moved forward a row to spread out my stuff about halfway through.

Where were you?

Did you take yer missus with you???

I was sat down at the back, in the blue polo. I bought the gnome Laughing

From here I could enjoy the bidding battles between the West Yorkshire mafia on my left. Mr Hewitt in front of me and Mr Allen to my right. Throw in Tadpole who was sat just behind you and one or two others.

Concerning Rob the auctioneers footballing favouritism, he's a life long Huddersfield Town fan.

Hence Rob's comment about the Terriers being the top team in Yorkshire currently.

No, I was on my own behind Robert Adcock who was right at the front.

I had a nice chat with David Allen in Costa over the road - I'd never really spoken to him before.

I bought many of the Blades' lots as it was an opportunity to put a stock of them together. But if others bid, I let them go.

Interestingly, there were hardly any Wednesday lots in the catalogue. I'm wondering if their auctions always have that Blades bias or if this was a one-off?

I did not go to this auction this time but I have been a few times before.
It is always competitive and difficult to get a bargain.

I listened in on line for the lots I was interested in and bagged one out of three.

Was it Robert Adcock doing battle for the England v Wales programme?

Don't think so, Martino.

There was a younger guy to my left who was bidding huge amounts on the higher end lots, like the Duncan Edwards' vase and the England / Wales programme, (I think).

Hope you didn't mention to Mr Allen, that he looks like a certain prime minister. Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

Sorry Dave.

Concerning the auction, No, a bit of a one off with the United content., its usually the other way round. What with Wednesday being 'massive' and all that Smile

Thanks, Sharrowblade - looks like I'll have the chance to create a stock of Owls programmes next time then!

Still thinking about Rob's incredible energy levels through the auction.

You are right that the catalogue was light on condition descriptions - in hindsight, you could get a feel for the condition using the estimate.

But I rarely bid on items from afar any more and drove over twice from Oldham, once the day before to view and then again on the day.

It's more time and petrol cost and effort to do it this way but at least you know what you are buying (or trying to buy) that way.

But even though I'd had a look, there was at least one lot (the ones in that battered case) where there were some almost new 60's and early 70's issues hidden underneath some other stuff which was a nice surprise when I got home.

Almost felt like I was in that ITV4 programme Storage Wars where they buy up storage lots with only 5 minutes viewing and then go through the process of searching all the piles of stuff hoping for some hidden gems. Just imagining the main characters in the programme discovering some old football programmes - ''I don't know if these things are worth anything' is a standard line in the script before they drive over to some specialist to give them either the good or the bad news on possible value. Laughing

PS In the history of the Blades /Owls, are Wednesday regarded as the 'bigger club'?

i notice a lot of the older Sheffield is now on Ebay at outrageous prices for Blades pre war. I couldnt make it this time but consoled myself winning a couple of lots on the telephone. It was the auction in Sheffield the following day that attracted most interest i believe.

All the lots I won were the post 1960/1 stuff.

There were many lots of 50's issues and earlier.

Don't know if the stuff on Ebay now was in the auction on Friday.

Mine is still being sorted in front of the TV Laughing

Ok, I didn't say that, that was John, but as in any auction you really do have to go and have a look. I have had the opportunity in the past to purchase all the United stuff that was near the end of the auction and I have passed on it.

I know its had its critics on this forum, but given certain attendees I think that should speak volumes.

As regards the bigger club. Wednesday, they are massive Very Happy
