25th Oct 1969 FA Amatuer (!) Cup 3rd Qualifying Round tie at Silkstone Road, Sheffield between Frecheville Community Association FC and Roe Farm Athletic from Derbyshire.

It seems from the notes that Roe Farm had risen quickly in 10 years to become "the top amateur team in the Derby area" having won the East Midland Regional League.

Not sure they were that good as Frecheville won 6-2

58 years ago and to Devon for a replayed FA Cup tie between Bideford and Penzance.
The sides had played out a 2-2 draw 4 days earlier in Cornwall - here, Bideford won 2-0 before losing out to Yeovil Town in the 4th Qualifying round.

The 16 page programme is the equal of many league clubs' issues of the time. Interesting item on the "nourishing lunch of genuine Cornish pasties" that the Penzance Supporters Club had laid on for the 70 Bideford fans who had made the long trip west for the previous game.

For those who love those old-fashioned telephone numbers, there's a single-digit gem here from Miss Muffet's Cafe Smile

.....which is, nowadays, "Blackwell's Pasties".

65 years ago (1948) and a scarce single sheet for a Lancashire Senior Cup tie between Blackpool and Liverpool.

Blackpool reached the final this season defeating Liverpool 2-0 and Manchester United 3-1 on the way but eventually lost in the final to Rochdale by 1 goal to nil.

69 years ago (1944) and a programme for a Football League North fixture between Blackpool and Southport.

After winning 5-4 in the corresponding fixture a week earlier (which I also featured on this thread) Blackpool won this one 10-2 with 4 goals from Mortensen, 2 a piece from Dodds and O’Donnell and one each from Matthews and Dix.

A standard 4 page programme was issued.

1978 and 1-0 win against Epsom & Ewell in an Isthmian League Division 1 fixture. Maidenhead finished 3rd behind Harlow Town and Harrow Borough, Epsom & Ewell 10th (of 22). 16 page programme, glossy cover but very poorly duplicated internal pages.

The below programme is a relatively modern issue compared to some issues displayed above, put this one up because this was from around when I started supporting Leeds and following football generally - Leeds also gained promotion to the 'old' first division.

Bradford City (away) 1989-90

[/img]

Leeds won 1-0 thanks to a Bobby Davison goal, in front of a crowd of 12,527...

63 years ago. A 3-1 win for Arsenal puts them top of the table, the Rams dropping to 14th.

62,889 in attendance.

Usual high-quality 16 page programme issued by the Gunners. Scan of match ticket also included.

The dealer I got this one from didn't spot the ticket hidden inside the programme!

75 years ago (1938) and a programme for a 1st Division fixture between Preston North End and Blackpool.

The game ended 1-1 with just under 30,000 in attendance.

The programme was 16 pages and contained lots of adverts one of which advertised the Ford Eight (a bit like the original Ford Popular) for just £115 or a de luxe saloon version for £125.

This programme cost me more than that.

1921 and a Great Western Suburban League fixture away to Uxbridge where 1,000 people witnessed a 1-1 draw. Uxbridge finished 3rd, Maidenhead 7th and Botwell Mission won the title. Four page programme printed black on red.

The same day Preston were playing Blackpool, Derby were at Stamford Bridge knowing a win could put them top of the table.

Duly accomplished - Ronnie Dix and Dai Astley on target in a 2-0 victory in front of 37,919 fans.

Usual 8 page Chelsea issue, and, as ever the cartoons on the front cover are a highlight. As is much of the writing - as quirky as ever.

Large ad on page 4 features all the upcoming acts at the Chelsea Palace Theatre. "Another rollicking variety bill", as they put it.

Claude Dampier, The Moxham Trio, Douglas Leonard (the singing ventriloquist), Joy, Jack & Joe and. to finish with, The Three Cheers and their "big surprise".

Don't suppose anyone knows what that big surprise was, do they?

1926 and a visit to Chesham United for a Spartan League fixture which Maidenhead won 2-1 in front of 1,200 people. Maidenhead finished 1st and Chesham 2nd, three points behind. Large four page programme printed black on beige. Pre-war Chesham United programmes seem, for some reason, to be extremely commonplace.

46 years ago (1967) and a standard single sheet for an FA Youth cup tie between Blackpool and a team called Gleneagles.

I had never given much thought to our opponents in this fixture, but now that I am concentrating more on reserves and youth cup matches, I would like to find out something about this team.

The current Gleneagles FC hails from Durham, but weren’t in existence back then, and I shouldn’t imagine they were from the famous Scottish village. There have also been other clubs with Gleneagles in the name but I just don’t know anything about this particular club.

I will have to do a little digging unless someone can shed some light on where this team was likely to have been based.

Back to 1976 and a UCL fixture between Stewart & Lloyds and Olney Town.

8 page programme issued - the front cover illustration very apt for a club who were formed as a works team back in the 1930s.
