There was a Northern Floodlit League and this spawned a Northern Floodlit League Challenge Cup but it is not something I have ever researched so I have no details.

80 years ago (1933) and a Division 2 fixture between Bury and Blackpool.

Blackpool won 5-2 with a hat-trick from Jimmy Hampson.

The programme was 8 pages, a good proportion taken up with adverts.

Interesting fixtures that afternoon included Bradford Park Avenue v Manchester United which Bradford won by 6 goals to 1. Shocked

1950 and an Amateur Cup tie at home to Hemel Hempstead which Maidenhead won 1-0. This season saw "The Magpie" printed in a variety of colours, but the quality of the paper (due to a reintroduction of rationing) was a throwback to the immediate post-war tissue like quality. The staples used during this era mean that it is almost impossible to find a copy that didn't have rusty ones. Eight page issue printed black on pink paper.

102 years ago today the Birmingham League programme from the Potters reserve fixture.

An experimental forward line saw the Potters fail to win, with the game finishing 2-2

The Potters gained revenge in the reverse fixture 9 days later, with a 5-0 win. Sadly, I don't have the programme Sad

18 years ago and to the haunted village of Penparcau, just down the road from Aberystwyth, for what the programme declares to be the "day of destiny" with the visit of Rhyl for a Welsh Cup 2nd Round tie.

Penparcau describe themselves as "complete underdogs" for the match so probably did better than they imagined, only losing 2-0.

8 page programme is included inside what appears to be a standard 28 page advert-laden wraparound for the season.

The cover of which bears the image of "the black dog of Penparcau" - whose ghost, to this day, is said to haunt the area, mournfully crying and looking for its long-lost owner....

OK, cheating now since I'll be at Hampden tomorrow night. Game against Portugal from earlier in the same qualifying campaign, also 0-0!

75 years ago (1938) and a Division 1 fixture between Manchester United and Blackpool.

A superb large format 16 page programme was issued but without an actual date (only the season) or opponents on the cover.

There is an interesting piece about the Football League juggling the fixtures in the 35/6 season to hinder the pools but not publishing them until the last minute thus drastically affecting attendances. Hard to imagine that this couild be allowed to happen.

The game ended goalless with just under 40,000 in attendance.

1927 and a visit to Cowley in the FA Cup with Maidenhead winning 1-0. Eight page programme, cover black on green paper, inside black on white.

"the long journey" - it is 32 miles from Maidenhead to Cowley.

For me probably one of the 'campest' football covers I have ever seen.

Sheffield Wednesday 0 Middlesbrough 1.

58 years ago. One of my favourite programme covers.

4-2 to Derby in front of 6,335.

8 pages for 3d. By the time you were halfway through your bovril you'd have finished reading it.

52 years ago (1961) and a Lancashire Senior Cup tie between Blackpool and Accrington Stanley.

Accrington won this tie 1-0 but withdraw from the competition before the next round.

This was to be Accrington's last season in the league under their original identity.

A single sheet programme was issued.

1947 and a match played at Maidenhead in the RAF Inter-Command Football Cup competition between the Reserve Command and the Coastal Command. Usual four page issue printed black on white. A "Special number" edition of "The Magpie", issues of which have been the bane of my collecting.

42 years ago and the visit of Erith & Belvedere to Horley for a qualifying round tie in the Amateur Cup.

4 page programme issued - rather than adverts surrounding the team line-ups, Horley do the reverse in the centre pages. It looks good. A welcome to Erith on the back page. Their manager of the time was Roy Dwight.

Horley left their unusually named ground in 2003, moving to The New Defence. Both grounds were named in honour of those who had fallen in the two World Wars.

Doncaster Rovers v Leeds United 17th October 1942 as part of the Football League Northern section.

The match yielded a 2-2 draw in front of a mere 2000 spectators.

A modern day programme for a change, covering a game from Blackpool’s brief but eventful Premier League adventure.

This match was against Manchester City and the game typified Blackpool’s season.

They dominated for long periods, missed opportunities to take the lead and fell behind to a goal that was definitely offside.

The game ended 3-2 to City which took them up to 2nd whilst Blackpool sat comfortably in 10th.

The programme was 84 pages and cost £3.
