69 years ago (1944) and a 4 page programme for a Football League North fixture between Blackpool and Preston North End.
The game ended 1-1 with Matthews scoring Blackpool’s goal and McIntosh scoring for Preston.

63 years ago and to northern Cornwall for a tie from the first qualifying round of the FA Amateur Cup.
4 page programme issued costing 3d.
Immediately following this match Wadebridge's reserves took on Port Isaac but, in terms of printed line-ups, the programme only covered the main cup tie. I wonder how many punters hung around for the second game?
Fish, chips and peas for one shilling - those were the days, indeed!

64 years ago (1949) and a 1st Division fixture between Sunderland and Blackpool.
A 16 page programme was issued but without any match details on the cover.
Just under 65,000 witnessed a 1-1 draw with Mortensen scoring Blackpool’s goal.
That's quite a difference in attendances between this game and the Birmingham/Portsmouth one featured above.

This day 75 years ago. 23,539 watch Derby, lying 2nd in the table, inflict a 3-1 home defeat on Brentford, lying 2nd from bottom.
24 page programme full of reading and evocative advertising. Great value for 2d.
On page 9, however, is a poignant reminder of how close the nation was to war. The request for ARP wardens is accompanied by the somewhat optimistic observation that "we have escaped war for the time being and are thankful". Not for long, though.

October 9th v sheff utd, a rare win of 6-2 to pompey.
Standard 8 page programme with the usual ads for Brickwoods, empire news and admission prices for the next Floodlight match v Pegasus.
Top price of 5/- for south stand centre down to ground admission of 1/6.
And this is how 'Plum' saw the match which peter harris scored 4 goals.

Thanks Pete |
Just taking advantage as Sheffield United are Pompey's bogey team especially at Bramall Lane.......
On a happier note, that season 1954/55, Wednesday finished bottom....

48 years ago and an unusual programme covering a Beckenham League Cup tie between Edenstone and New Cross Railway.
6 page gatefold issue is a curious mixture of typed and handwritten text so I suspect the "print run" may have been very much in single figures!
This was the home team's second game of the season and, having lost their opening match 8-0 due to the fact that hardly any of those selected bothered to turn up on the day, the half page of club notes warn everyone concerned that a repeat performance could result in the club being thrown out of the Beckenham League Division 3.
Slight improvement on the pitch - they only lost 5-0 this time....and managed to field a full team in the process.

There are some cracking programmes recently on this thread but this isn't one of them
Still, included is a railway handbill for the benefit of away supporters.

58 years ago (1955) and an early season friendly between Watford and Blackpool.
The match was arranged to fulfill a promise by Blackpool that they would send a full side to play a game at Vicarage Road after Jimmy Kelly was transferred from Watford to Blackpool the previous season.
Blackpool had played at Luton on the Saturday and stayed over to play this match which they won 4-1.
A nice 16 page programme was produced.

I must admit sharrow I do like these railway handbills and I always try and look out for any involving Blackpool.
Unfortunately even some of these can fetch a premium price nowadays. |

Here's a nice old one I have from 1905/06.
I'm still not sure what's meant by a "single fare and a quarter" so if you're up on railway phraseology, please let me know!

That's a nice one derby and looks to be in good condition as well.
I was never a railway buff but I prseume it just means that from those stations to Derby a return fare will only be the price of a single fare plus one quarter of the single fare.
Some kind of matchday deal being cheaper than travel on other days. Very reasonable. |

Thanks. That makes sense, Bispham - I never really understood why a single fare was, mile for mile, more expensive than a return! _________________ http://www.flickr.com/photos/derby1884/sets/ |

October 10th is quite limited for games by some quirk of the calendar.
Back 60 years and a 2nd division fixture by the Thames. 25,522 watch 17th placed Fulham thrash 8th placed Derby 5-2.
12 page programme for 4d. Plenty reading contained within. Included is a full page advert for "Elasto" which promises to "revitalise your blood" and put an end to "ponderous sluggishness".
In that case, I'll take a dozen packs, please
