1968 and a Thursday night visit to Liberty Lane, Addlestone for the 1st leg of a Mithras Cup tie which ended 2-1 to the home side. Four page programme printed red on white. Addlestone added "& Weybridge" in 1980 to try and appeal to more people but the local Surrey folk just weren't interested and the club folded in 1985 with the ground being redeveloped for housing.

54 years ago and a qualifying round tie in the FA Cup between Cheshire County Lge rivals Ellesmere Port Town and Witton Albion.

The match went with form, a 4-1 win to the home side who lay 4th in the table compared to Witton, who were 5 places off the bottom.

16 page pocket-size programme issued - limited reading material but there is a one-line football factoid at the top of each page which adds to the interest value.

There's a big ad for the "Keyworth Espresso Coffee Bar" on the back page. These were all the rage in the late 50s/early 60s - as anyone who's seen the Tony Hancock movie "The Rebel" will well remember!

Burscough beat Ellesmere Port 2-1 in the next round.

Is that when he asked for a coffee without any froth?

Indeed!

"No froth? I spend all this money on a frothing machine and he doesn't want any froth?"

The late, great Mario Fabrizi - hugely underrated comic actor and one of the few people who could keep pace with Hancock when it came to knocking back the booze....

18th October 1952 a 4-2 win for Pompey at Stoke.

Att. 29,521

A nice 10 page programme.

A new flat charge of 1/- for reserve games. Write up on 21 yr old Charles Finney who scored on his debut v Man Utd the previous week

This is how the Football Mail reported the match......

44 years ago (1969) and a Division 2 fixture between Sheffield United and Blackpool.

This was my first full season travelling regularly to away matches without my dad and I must admit me and my mates had some scary moments on our travels, not least walking around Sheffield.

On this day the Blades were top of the table with Blackpool in ninth. I would have been happy with a point but the Seasiders grabbed both in a thrilling 3-2 victory.

Blackpool won promotion that season and Preston were relegated.Thumbs Up

A good 16 page programme was issued.

1947 and a visit to the Spencer Stadium, Banbury in the FA Cup and the usual very informative programme was issued.

Match action at the stadium in August 1948. On a visit to the ground in 1979, the stand in the photograph was disused but had a full length boarded montage of supporters at the front. In 2007 (and presumably now) seemingly every fixture and fitting at the ground was still painted either scarlet or gold.

This simple typed single sheet was produced for the game between Nottingham Boys and Barnsley Boys at Meadow Lane 52 years ago. All these "boys" will be in their late sixties now. Alan Woodward (Sheffield United) was in the Barnsley team.

Am guessing this was an English Schools Trophy match though there is no
reference to this. No price shown so maybe given away free.

59 years ago and a (presumably floodlit) friendly between Aldershot and Derby.

Large 8 page issue. Reading confined to club notes and pen-pictures of the Rams players. For some reason, some of the Shots players' Christian names are given, others aren't. Most odd!

Nice ad from Stoodleys restaurant including a picture of the tables in all their finery. Linen napkins, vases of flowers on the tables - a pity about the rather utilitarian seating, though. Is the restaurant still in existence? Probably not.

If anyone knows the result of this match, attendance etc., please let me know.

This day 84 years ago and a qualifying round FA Cup tie between Tufnell Park and Tilbury.

Large single sheet folded lengthwise to make a 4 page programme.

Plenty reading in the copious club notes including news that the Chairman had rewarded the players for a good performance in a previous game by handing over a large tin of "Sharp's Kreemy Toffee" for them to eat on the coach home. I wonder if that breached the rules on "paying" amateur players? Smile

At half-time, the Tufnell Park Military Band were due to perform a march, a waltz, a foxtrot and a serenade. Something for everyone, then.

There's also a request for information on Tufnell Park fan "Old Mac" whose stentorian tones had been a common feature at home games but who hadn't been seen for a while.

Maybe he'd given up on the team as, that season, they finished bottom of the table in the Isthmian League.

Tufnell Park FC are the predecessors of the current-day Haringey Borough FC.

1963 and a 3-1 win for Maidenhead at Newbury Park, Ilford in the 4th qualifying round of the FA Cup took them into the 1st round proper and, for the second season running, a tie against another non-league side. Since the Second World War, Maidenhead have only reached the 1st round proper seven times, and have been drawn against league opponents just twice. Large four page programme issued, printed blue on white.

One from the same season (1945/6) as the Barnsley programme two above, this one a 4 page issue for a Football League North fixture between Newcastle United and Blackpool.

Over 35,000 witnessed a 2-2 draw which was a very good result for Blackpool as Newcastle had already chalked up home wins of 6-0, 9-1 and 6-2.

57 years ago and a Kent Amateur League Cup tie on the north coast of Kent between Herne Bay's reserve team and Cheriton.

12 page programme issued for the match. Club notes do a sterling job at promoting the club bingo night...."see those drums swirling and the lucky numbers come out. See the smiling winners and the sighs of those so near and remember that you, too, could be a winner"

Though it's not in great condition, I picked up this programme for 5p at a car boot sale so can't complain.

Nowadays Herne Bay still play at Winch's Field and the local community radio also operates there - from a hut in the corner of the ground. If, like me, you enjoy psychedelic and prog rock, there's an excellent 4 hour show broadcast from 7 to 11pm on a Tuesday night available online.

20th October 1965

Jimmy Dickinson Testimonial at Fratton Park v West Ham.

Result 1-4 att 19,000....A great send off for a player whose career spanned 20 years for 1 club.

If my memory serves me right, he was never booked.

The programme, 64 pages costing 2/6.
