61 years ago (1952) and a 1st Division fixture between Wolves and Blackpool.
Nearly 50,000 spectators witnessed a 5-2 victory for Blackpool and the goals didn’t stop there, the following week they put 8 past Charlton.
An 8 page programme was issued and judging by the condition of my copy I need to start looking for a replacement.

This day 83 years ago and to Streatham Lane for a 1st round FA Amateur Cup tie between Mitcham Wanderers and Leyland Motors.
4 page programme costing 1d issued - club notes on the cover, team lineups in the centre pages surrounded by a mass of advertising.
A wealthy area, perhaps, as there are 2 separate adverts from butchers specialising in game, another butcher promising "home-killed colonial meat" and another ad for " genuine port wines of Oporto".
No cheap beer and tobacco here!
In 1932, Mitcham Wds merged (rather acrimoniously) with neighbours Tooting Town to form the present-day Tooting & Mitcham United.

78 years ago September 21st 1935.
A 2-1 win for United over Southampton.
These are my favourite programmes of United's pre-war years

84 years ago (1929) and an 8 page programme for a Central League (reserve) fixture between Blackpool and West Bromwich Albion.
Nice to see a date on the cover, no opponents shown though, and a programme number which in this instance was number 7.
There are a lot of adverts but also some good reading including an article on the great Jimmy Hampson. He was the top goalscorer in England with 46 goals that season which saw Blackpool promoted to the top flight for the first time.

Also from 84 years ago - league leaders Derby go down to a 0-2 defeat in East London in front of 26,601 spectators.
4 page programme costing 1d issued. No adverts, sadly.
There's a feature, on page 2, of Hammers right-back William Wade which mentions that, when not playing football, he finds employment as a chauffeur!
Pre-match and half-time entertainment was provided by the "K" Division Metropolitan Police Band whose playlist included the intriguingly titled " West Ham Swaying Waltz"....

1945 and the first season of the Corinthian League and a fixture at York Road against Twickenham. The visitors, who were formed in 1943, had hoped to arrange a ground share with Brentford FC, but this never materialised and they played most of their matches on opponents grounds. Maidenhead won 9-1 and finished 5th, Twickenham 8th (of 9)
Prior to 2004, I had only ever come across one Maidenhead United home programme from 1945/46 season, but a chap IIRC called Paul White from Cornwall put one onto a well known auction site and I was subsquently able to negotiate a price for all of the other copies he had, for which I was extremely grateful.
It really is a wonder that any of these survived being the thinnest, flimiest pieces of tissue like paper you can imagine. |

68 years ago (1945) and a 4 page programme for a Football League North fixture between Bradford Park Avenue and Blackpool.
Blackpool rested a number of regulars for this fixture and it back fired as they lost 0-3 in front of nearly 16,000 spectators.

This day 62 years ago saw Derby's "Colts" visit Kettering for a friendly match against the home team's reserve side.
Interesting typo on the front cover as regards the date.
6 page gatefold programme. Club notes advise patrons that cushions can now be hired from the club to make the wooden grandstand seats a tad more comfortable! Whether that meant anyone turning up with a cushion of their own wouldn't be admitted is not stated....
Of the Derby lineup, 7 of them eventually went on to make appearances for the first team.

63 years ago (1950) and a 1st Division fixture between Blackpool and Aston Villa.
Standard programmes for this season were 8 pages with a page of notes, centre pages with team line-ups and fixtures for 1st and 2nd teams, league tables, half time scoreboard and details of next fixtures.
The rest of the programme was made up of adverts, one a full page advertising Blackpool’s various shows which included Tessie O’Shea and Nat Jackley at the Opera House, Jimmy Edwards at the Winter Gardens and Josef Locke at the Grand Theatre.
The match ended 1-1 in front of 33,000 spectators.

41 years ago and a Northern Premier League fixture between 14th placed Mossley and Northwich Victoria, who were lying 2 places below them.
4 page programme costs 2p and,, on the face of it, doesn't appear too impressive but the centre page club notes would, these days, incur much retribution from the FA as the Mossley manager takes up a whole page criticising the system of player suspension.
As the article becomes more impassioned, he concludes by saying "surely one of the basic principles of British justice is that everyone is treated alike irrespective of status". Sadly, he runs out of space at that point.
Worth having this programme just for this article alone!

45 years ago (1968) and a rare opportunity to see Blackpool play a competitive game on what was then a non-league ground.
The fixture was a Lancashire Senior Cup tie played at Christie Park between Morecambe and Blackpool.
Blackpool sent a reserve side and promptly lost 2-0.
A neat 16 page programme was issued with absolutely no clue on the cover what the fixture was.

86 years ago - and Arsenal could have gone top of the table here but slipped to a 4-0 defeat at the Baseball Ground in front of a crowd of 16,539 (Derby's lowest of the season).
12 page programme with a generic cover for the season. Copious amounts of advertising throughout!
Charles Buchan in the Gunners' team.

63 years (1950) and an 8 page programme for a benefit match for Nuneaton Borough's Jim Kelly.
Jim captained the Nuneaton Borough side against his brother Hughie's side which was made up mainly of his Blackpool teammates including Stanley Matthews and a younger brother, Joe Kelly.
The game ended 2-2 and the crowd was over 10.000.
