76 years ago (1937) and a 16 page programme for a 1st Division fixture between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Blackpool.

Lots of reading and facts but lots of adverts as well.

You could take a trip to Blackpool Illuminations for 6/- (30p) or buy a 4 and a half ton Guy Otter truck for just £410.

Over 30,000 witnessed a 1-0 win to the Wolves.

This day in 1935.

21,299 at the Baseball Ground to see Derby beat Preston 2-0.

Usual 16 page programme issued for the game. Advertising predominates but the club notes include some rather ambiguous comments on the validity of centre-forward Jack Bowers' latest injuries, linking these to rumours of a possible transfer request. On which the club were taking a firm stance.

A player feigning injury rather than play for the club?
Happens now, happened then!

A year later, though, he was on his way to Leicester City......

1925 and Walthamstow Avenue were the visitors to York Road for a Spartan League fixture which ended 3-3. Miadenhead finished 3rd, Walthamstow Avenue 4th, and the title was won by Great Eastern Railway (Romford). Four page programme printed black on olive green.

77 years ago (1936) and a programme between Norwich City and Blackpool in a 2nd Division fixture.

Blackpool won this one 2-1 and finished the season as runners up to Leicester City, gaining promotion to the 1st Division for the 2nd time, where they remained until 1967.

A substantial 32 page programme was issued.

A work of art is that Norwich cover.

Is there a lot of reading material in it?

A fair bit but out done by the usual plethory of adverts. A rough count totals adverts for 58 different firms and products.

There is a page on club chatter, 4 pages on 'Our vistors today', 3 pages entitled 'Canary Seed' discussing the game, 2 page centre spread showing the team line-ups plus the usual fixture lists, tables, goal scorers etc.

Despite all the ads, which are fascinating anyway in there own right, this is a very good pre war programme.

4 pages on the visiting team is mighty impressive.

I see watch adverts even back then always showed the time as ten minutes past ten - one of the oldest marketing tricks in the book!

79 years ago today - the 33/4 annual "Derbyshire FA Cup Final" which had been carried forward from the end of the previous season due to the Rams' pre-arranged tour of Germany in May of 1934.

8 page programme issued which was, for the times, fairly sparse on reading material.

1947 and a visit to the Pilot Field, Hastings for a Corinthian League Memorial Shield tie which ended 1-1. The East Sussex side produced a reasonably substantial programme but aside from the centre-pages, the rest was advertising.

66 years ago (1947) and a 4 page programme for a 1st Division fixture between Aston Villa and Blackpool.

The programme had nothing about the game other than the team line ups.

An interesting fixture in the half times was a 2nd Division game between Tottenham Hotspur and Bradford Park Avenue.

Blackpool won the match 1-0 in front of 56,000 spectators.

This day 83 years ago.

Derby, lying 3rd in the table, visit Bramall Lane. An entertaining 3-3 draw is witnessed by 22,459 spectators.

20 page programme issued costing 2d. Heaps to read and, as ever, the adverts are just as interesting.

Overalls at 6/6d from Wreghitts the Gents Outfitters, Motor Cycles from £28 available from Walter Wragg and a 3 day break at the Blackpool Illuminations for the princely sum of 35 bob from A.Hancock "the friendly travel agent"

Add in 6 tunes (including a waltz and 2 fox-trots) by the Sheffield Imperial Prize Band at half-time and what more could one ask for?

1946 and Issue 1 of "The Magpie". Eastbourne were the opponents for a Corinthian League Memorial Shield tie which Maidenhead won 3-2.

The club numbered their home programmes between September 1946 and April 1956. A wonderful idea for a new collector I had thought when I first came across an example of a programme from this era 35+ years ago. Fast forward and it was only this summer when I was passed the club receipt books covering that period that I was finally able to complete the list of matches relating to no's 1 to 215 and now need to track down those elusive missing issues.

As I was at this game, it's a shock to the system to realise it's all of 28 years ago now.

For some reason this was an all-ticket match...as the Derby end was sold out, the only way I could get a ticket was to pretend I was a Bury fan on the day.

Match finished 1-1, Jeff Chandler missed an injury-time penalty for the Rams. The low crowd of 3,684 a reflection of Bury's ticketing policy.

77 years ago (1936) and a programme from Blackpool’s promotion season.

This match was against Bury which ended 2-1 to the visitors.

A nice 20 page programme was issued and for anyone with an interest in pre-war programmes and covers, the cover design changed part way through this season.

43 years ago 1970.

The original fixture had been abandoned two days previous due to torrential rain after 35 mins with the scores level at 0-0.

The re-arranged game took place two days later on the monday evening. No additional programme was available. United won 2-1

79 years ago (1934) and a 16 page programme for a 2nd Division fixture between Blackpool and Brentford.

Another good pre-war programme but with a slightly different cover to the first couple of games from this season.

The game ended 2-2 in front of 24,000 spectators.

1945 and a visit to Essex for a Corinthian League fixture against Grays Athletic which included a pre-match dedication for the Memorial Shield being presented to the League. Four page issue printed black on white. Grays won 3-2 and went on to win the title and the Memorial Shield. Maidenhead finished 5th (of 9)

And a little snippet from the Maidenhead Advertiser...
