41 years ago and a trip into deepest Cornwall for Crystal Palace.
Illogan RBL had just won the Cornwall Combination League for the second successive season but had, again, been rejected in their attempts to move up to the South-Western League for reasons outlined, with some bitterness, in the programme editorial.
Palace had promised to send a strong team for the match and Illogan went to some effort, issuing a 16 page programme costing 5p with photographs of both teams and detailed pen-pics.
Most of the advertising comes from tradesmen in nearby Redruth.
Nice ground - look it up on Google Street View.

Small world, Pete.
Sorry! It was either this one or Wick Thistle v Motherwell. _________________ http://www.flickr.com/photos/derby1884/sets/ |

38 years ago and New Mills host a Derby side made up mostly of reserve team players for a friendly which had originally been scheduled for May that year.
20 page programme issued. Mostly advertising but includes one article reminding patrons who might need to use the temporary gents toilet facility " not to lean on it". The mind boggles.
If anyone can remember what those 2 bowler-hatted figures used to advertise on TV back then, please remind me. Was it bread?

Continuing the 1992 North East trip from yesterday, Blackpool played this match at Prudhoe East End (now Prudhoe Town of the Wearside League).
A preliminary match was also played between the team’s under 19s before the main fixture.
A fairly sparse 16 page programme was issued and annoyingly without opponents or date on the cover. I have therefore also copied the inside front page to show the fixture details.

66 years ago and the annual charity match at Easter Road between an Edinburgh Select XI and a top English club. 1947 saw Derby venture north to challenge for the Allison Cup (as presented to the winners).
If anyone knows the score/attendance, please let me know.

Derby - I have just selected the equivalent programme from 1948 to feature in this thread and was hoping it would include at least the score from the 1947 game but unfortunately it doesn't. |

65 years ago Blackpool were invited to play in the annual Edinburgh Charities Day match against an Edinburgh Select X1.
This year the match was played at Tynecastle Park the home of Heart of Midlothian.
The programme from 1947 which derby1884 featured a few days ago was played at Easter Road, the home of Hibernian, so I presume the venues alternated each year.
A 4 page programme on pink paper was issued and the pre match entertainment shown included the Military Band of the Royal Scots and the Newhaven Fisherwoman’s Choir.
I have also included a scan of a 6 page fold out style pirate programme which I acquired many years before the official one.

48 years ago and to Love Street for the annual Paisley Charity Cup match. On this occasion, Northampton Town, newly promoted to the first division, were invited north.
8 page programme issued, no advertising, plenty to read. Included is a plea from manager Doug Millward for the fans to start singing "When The Saints Go Marching In" to spur the team on this season!
The programme is undated but is definitely the 7th of August - unusually there was a H/T scoreboard covering friendlies included and that has Oxford v Derby there, so 7/8 it is. Scan of that also included.
I don't know for sure who won this Cup but I think I read somewhere that St.Mirren did. Can anyone confirm?
This used to be one of the rarest Cobblers 65/6 aways but I've seen a few come up over the last year or so. Or maybe it's the same programme doing the rounds?

22 years ago and Merthyr Tydfil make the short trip to the former mining village of Penrhiwceiber in the Rhondda for a pre-season friendly to help raise funds for the home club to buy a new minibus.
12 page programme issued and very smart it is, too.
Glasbrook Field, where the home club play, is built on the site of the former Penrhiwceiber Colliery (which closed in 1985) and I've included a scan of the small stand which runs parallel to the pitch.
The Merthyr manager of the time, Wynford Hopkins, was born in
Penrhiwceiber and the programme thanks him for agreeing to aid the club by arranging this match.
A few well known names in the Merthyr team - Tommy Hutchinson, George Wood and Paul Giles to name just three.

51 years ago a Blackpool 1st X1 played this friendly at Bury and 2 days later they sent a 2nd X1 to Bury for another friendly.
Bob Stokoe was manager of Bury at the time who later went on to manage Blackpool and of course Sunderland in that famous FA Cup Final victory.
A similar style single sheet was issued for each game and this one for the 8th is rather grubby.
Season ticket details on the reverse show the dearest seats at £7.8s (£7.40p).

In 1991 Blackpool played a friendly at Fleetwood on 5th August and 4 days later sent another team to play a testimonial match.
The testimonial was for Fleetwood’s Stuart Robinson a loyal servant for well over 10 years.
The Fleetwood team comprised the 1985 FA Vase Finalists whereas the Blackpool side included both past and present players.
A very informative 24 page programme was issued.

26 years ago and something of a coup for Hinckley Town as John Toshack's Real Sociedad visit for the official opening of the club's new floodlight system.
Frank Worthington had accepted an invitation to be a guest player for Hinckley for this match.
28 page glossy programme issued costing 50p. 17 pages are advertising but still plenty to read.

27 years ago and Dundee United were the visitors to Luncarty (4 miles from Perth) for the home club's centenary match.
Excellent 20 page programme produced, the historical articles/photos sufficient to make it value for money at 50p.
A number of ex-Luncarty players made it in the professional game on both sides of the border and the programme lists a dozen or so, including Dave Ewing, Malcolm Darling and Sandy Wann.
The club moved to a new ground in the village in 1995 and currently play in the "McBookie.com East Region North Division" (to give it its sponsored title).
