I have just found an autograph sheet but have no idea what it is from
I have identified the following
?
Joe Harvey
Leon Leuty
Bob Langton,
Albert Stubbins
Stan Mortensen
Stanley Matthews
Jim Taylor
Johnny Morris
Ted Ditchburn
George Hardwick,
?

So 2 to identify and what was the game.
Looks like some sort of England team
Leon Luty was not a known name to me but it appears he won the FA Cup with Derby County and died of Leukemia whist still young and playing.

Any help appreciated

Leon Leuty died in 1955 aged 33 ? and Joe Harvey ended his career in 1953 Its more like a England B ,Football League X1 or a testimonial.

FOOTBALL LEAGUE X1 ?

There was an International League match at Blackpool between England and Ireland on 18th October 1950.

But the only name common to the line up in the programme and the autograph list is Stubbins.

England B game v Finland 15/5/49

Leon Leuty's only other appearance for B team was this one, so can't be a B International game.

Bert Williams
William Ellerington
Eric Westwood
Walter Harrison
Leon Leuty [c]
Jimmy Dickinson
Eric Parsons
Jimmy Mullen
Dennis Wilshaw
John Morris
Wilf Mannion

Have also found reference that he played for England B in a game against the Netherlands on 18 May 1949.

He was also in the England side for a game against Scotland in 1946 in aid of the Bolton disaster.

I reckon this is a testimonial game, probably up North somewhere given the locality of the players. Pretty sure it's not a B game or Inter-League game and certainly not a full international.

I don't know much about Leon Leuty either, shame to read of his very early death which is probably why I'd never heard of him. I have this nice photo of him....

I would agree Pete that this is more likely to be a testimonial sort of game.

I wonder if it could be from the unofficial international between England and Scotland played at Maine Road on 24 April 1946 in aid of the Bolton Disaster Fund.

Up to now I have been unable to find a line up but according to one of the England stats sites there is reference to this game in the Rothmans Book of Football Records and The Sunday Times Illustrated History of Football but whether it shows line ups is debatable.

However, someone on here will no doubt have the programme from this game to confirm or dispel this theory.

ENGLAND:
Frank Swift
Joseph Walton
George Hardwick
Billy Wright
Leon Leuty
Frank Mitchell
Stanley Matthews
Donald Welsh
Reginald Lewis
Wally Fielding
Wilf Mannion

Here's the Bolton Disaster Fund line up - don't think it's this one.

I'm not doubting you Treble in regards to possession. Far from it.

Surely the easiest way of identification, is to show us a scan of the said article. Otherwise, you're heading into Dangerman territory.

Furthermore, it appears that everyone has assumed, without any real credence, its some kind of line up from a particular game, and are trying to fill in the blanks.

Good luck with that one boys.

Good points Sharrow, but the players listed do look like a team - one keeper (Ditchburn), at least one full back (Hardwick), 2 centre-halves (Leuty & Taylor), and a forward line to die for (Matthews, Mortensen, Stubbins, Morris, Langton).

Suggest the 2 missing players are a full back and a wing half.

A scan would help though please Ray.

Not to forget wing half Joe Harvey.......

So that's leaves one full back short.

Could the missing ones be Bert Mozley and Wilf Mannion?

English League XI v Scottish League 17th mar 1948 at St James Park

Brilliant Sharrow, no doubt about it. Mozley at full back, Mannion at inside forward and so Stubbins must have been the travelling reserve.

Maybe Ray will offer you first refusal.
