Yes i thought that it worth a lot more, at the time i was bidding i was a bit short of cash could only go to £300 - the winning bidder may have put a lot more on it anyway, i think there was only something 18 people had viewed it & it wasn't listed in the main heading as a football programme etc it was sold with some old newspapers under the heading old paper or something similar,

Programme Monthly Issue 246 lists earliest known as Everton v Astley Bridge 4.9.1886. There is a copy of the front page in PM.

I'm pretty sure Everton were one of the earliest clubs to produce programmes.

Our biggest ever collector Dr. David France had 90% of every Everton programme ever produced before he sold the 'Everton Collection' to Everton FC for just under £1m.

I'll have to get his recent book out and find a definative list of earliest known Everton programmes for you.

I do have originals of 92.5% of all Millwall's home Southern League and Football League games since they published their first non-card readable-type programme in 1910.

But I somehow don't think Millwall will pay me £1 million for that little lot...

Checking in my 1906 copy of The Book of Football there is a very good reproduction of a match card for a game between Queens Park and The Wanderers at Hampden Park, Glasgow. It is dated October 1875.

Interestingly, as well as naming the players, they also offered identification by describing the colours of the caps and/or stockings each player was wearing.

hi Frampton
Our oldest home issue was a friendly against PNE 6.4.1895.

I used to know the guy who owned it but as I have not seen him for the last 20 years I'm not sure he still has it

regards

Everton are not categorically the first club to issue a programme (although this may be true or the club match for which the first programme was issued may have been an Everton game). They were however the first club to issue a regular match programme.

Cardiff City, as an amateur club playing in the South Wales League, issued team sheets for home games.

hi Doddsy

yes, first game as United, v Notts County 17/9/1898

as Newcastle East End v Darlington, Northern League, 12/11/1892

By the way I collect football medals and have an old one for East End fc dated May 1890 (later Newcastle United) presented to Mr J Proctor for his valued services to the team. I've been trying to find out for the last 10 years or so in what position Mr Proctor had with the team. Can you throw any light on this or know a Newcastle historian who may know?

regards

Hi mark, sounds like a great piece you have there Smile

From a little digging i've come up with the likely match details but unfortunately no reference to the name.

Tyne Charity Shield East End 6 - 2 Elswick Rangers 10/05/90

There is a new (??) book which i'm hoping to get off Santa called something like Pioneers of the early game which could possibly shed some light - if im good and it does appear under the tree i'll let you know if there is any reference lol

Paul Joannou is the officicial? club historian who is in the process of pulling together an updated history of the club which will be issued in autumn 2011

As an aside i know the owner of the back page is organising a display of memorabilia at a local museam in january (all items will be fully insured) would you be interested in putting the medal in along with any others you might have?

Cheers

Burnley's 1st official issue was for the opening game of the 1912/13 season against Glossop North End. This programme takes pride of place in my collection. However, an issue is known to exist for the home Reserve team game against Man City in 1909/10. This was not issued by Burnley FC though, and is perhaps one of the earliest known examples of a Pirate?
