I'm a complete novice at this so looking for some advice.

I'm, thinking about trying to get programmes signed from famous Scotland matches of the past, and as a start I have settled on the Wales game at Anfield in 1977, the original "Hand of God" which saw Scotland qualify for Argentina.

Now, I know it's not exactly going to be straightforward and it will take a while, but my starter for ten is that I will be at a dinner in November with Alan Rough as a speaker, so that will be chalked off, but how do you go about tracking down the other players involved? I guess the easy ones are the likes of Joe Jordan which would involve sending the programme to QPR, but the rest? all advice welcome. The team that night was;

1 Alan Rough
2 Sandy Jardine (Martin Buchan, '82)
3 Willie Donachie
4 Don Masson
5 Gordon McQueen
6 Tom Forsyth
7 Kenny Dalglish
8 Asa Hartford
9 Joe Jordan
10 Lou Macari
11 Willie Johnston

I also think Archie Gemmill was an unused sub.

Don Masson (who hails from Banchory where I used to live) runs a guest house, the details of which are in his Wikipedia entry.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Masson

should be easy enough to find out the phone number and give him a call

Last I heard of Willie Johnston was that he was kicked out of the pub he or his son ran in Kirkcaldy after an issue with the brewery but was living in the flat above it, that was over 12 months ago though, all his memorabilia was in the pub and he couldn't get access to it.

I would think tracking down the location of the players is the easy part.

Asa Hartford (Norwich city scout), Willie Donachie (Newcastle United academy) etc etc.

Actually, sending them a programme to sign via the post, must come with considerable risk. Numerous times back and forwards via the post, no guarantee that they'll get to receive it. Likely to get bent by Postie at some point. No

You wouldn't like to get 8/9 to sign it, and then one of the miserable gits bin it. Laughing

Tynie, make sure you keep hold of the programme, he'll only drop it.

I shall do some more investigations in that case Thumbs Up

As for the risk, well, you takes your chance I suppose and as long as you put a return envelope along with the programme you'd like to think there wouldn't be an issue.

Gordon McQuuen and Lou Macari both currently work for MUTV

They are mostly easy to find but i wouldn't give you any chance at all of getting it back through the post x 11
This is 2013 and not the 1950's.
They fornicators can't be bothered.
They are too concerned that somebody is going to make a couple of quid out of them.
They don't realise that if you send it out 11 times with return envelope and postage paid it will cost you about £35 and it won't be worth that
It will only cost you less than that if you use a re-used envelope and a half price stamp that got missed by the post office franking machine.

It's a risk, but the programme itself is not worth tuppence so not exactly laying much on the line, unless I'm two thirds of the way through the task of course and it never comes back.......maybe I'll start with those two first! (Gordon McQueen is a second cousin, not that he knows that!)

I'd reckon you could access Sandy Jardine via Rangers as he's in an ambassadorial role for them now, I think, following his cancer diagnosis.

Eck might know more

Might be a bit of a long shot but are there any forum members that could do the couriering for you - i.e. if one of them knows where the player is they could get the programme signed for you and post it back.

I am sure one or two members would be willing.

That would be great if anyone was able to do that, a big ask though.

I'm slowly trawling my way through the interwebby and finding some useful info.

Well good news, Don Masson signed the programme and returned it with a flyer for his guesthouse, might pay him a visit Smile

So, maybe Martin Buchan next since he appears to be at the PFA in Manchester.

Thanks seand.

Well, sent the programme off to Martin Buchan at the PFA on Monday second class, and it was back today! Nice signature as well.

Maybe Willie Donachie or Joe Jordan next.....
