Crystal Palace are giving season ticket holders and members the chance to vote on what the new club crest will be - when chosen it will replace the current crest and adorn everything from the shirt, to signage and other merchandise.

current crest

The current crest has been in use since 1994 and is apparently not copyrighted - with the current eagle being 'nicked' by a pub, a golf club and another football club abroad! Also with new owners, they want to put their own 'stamp' on the club, particularly with the Chairman being the head of an advertising agency!

The 4 proposed designs are below:-

A Seems to be winning the Palace fans forum polls at the moment, although people don't 'get' the odd red wing. Some fans think it is too close a copy to the Spurs logo

B Is the strongest 'brand' image, but is not universally popular because it is perceived to be too 'American'

C Has been compared to a 'Polish Vodka label', a pair of hands with fingers outstretched, or an eagle that has been 'run over'!!

D Is referred to as a 'pigeon' or the Liverpool badge

All of them are criticised for minimalising the representation of the Crystal Palace glass building, after which the club takes its name

There is a strong lobby to keep the current badge as well - citing that the club has a weak identity because it changed its nickname in the 70s from 'Glaziers' to 'Eagles', has changed it's basic shirt colours several times, and that we need to stick with one image rather than keep reinventing ourselves.

The club have made it clear that the badge will change to one of these 4 designs, sticking with what we have is not an option. I quite like B myself, if it could be tweaked to look less 'USA Major League Soccer'!

I think we're lucky to be consulted on things like this, and the clubs kits each year - many clubs don't do this sort of thing. our owners are regularly on the fans unofficial message forums on a near daily basis discussing stuff and anwering questions.

Would be very interested in what fans of other clubs think about the 4 designs - which would you choose and why?

They all look very American too me.

Shouldn’t Palarse be concentrating on staying in the Championship rather than fannying about with the club badge?

Whichever one they choose it will look out of place in League One next season which can not be said for the team. Nod

I think its great that the club are consulting the fans, but its sh*t that they are changing your club crest. Don't like any of the options, but would have to go for A. B is awful, like you said, it has MLS written all over it.

I agree with ForestMick, i wish Arsenal consulted with the fans before picking our badge.

For the Palace one i would pick A.

It would be A for me.

It’s interesting how clubs treat their crest/badge. Hearts for example have not changed their badge since it was adopted in the 1950’s (the badge is actually depicted in the cobbles on Edinburgh’s historic High Street, marking the spot of an infamous gaol), apart from a change of font. Our friends from Leith meanwhile have changed it three of four times in that intervening period as they struggle to find an identity Wink

Norwich briefly looked at changing the badge a couple of years ago, but it was not well received and so, so far we have stuck with what we have got.

Must say I prefer B out of all of them but like Palace's current badge so its a shame it has to change. Most new modern badges are worse than previous. Esp Arsenal, Coventry (although I think they went back), Leeds, Huddersfield, Chelsea etc.

QPR and Fulham also now have very poor crests.

I guess that at least all the options include an Eagle and some sort of representation of the Palace, and as has been said by others, it's good to be consulted.

QPR;s has to be the worst 'modern' new crest - all fake heraldic nonsense! If they wanted something that looks a bit historic, could they not have represented Queens Park itself in some way, such as the park gates or a tree that is typical in the park?

Must admit I like the 'A' option.

I understand the sentiments over all the options as I thought roughly the same, before even reading about Palace fan's comments.

Update:

Palace fans have have been bitching and moaning on the web forums that the four designs are all cr@p, and on one forum a thread started where fans could have a go at designing their own.

The club owners, who regualrly go on the forums, took one of the suggested designs and have made it option number 5 (voting still hasn't started yet!)

The Palace Chairman has not given up on changing our crest, and has informed us on the unofficial fans forum that it's going to all start up again next week, with some new designs, all supposedly designed by Palace fans

The real, actual voting has finally started now. With 6 designs rather than the initial 4.

On the fans forums, B and E are the frontrunners.

A has been described as Spurs
B as 'American franchise'
C as someone cutting up an old crest and sticking it together in a random order
D as 'the pigeon'
E as Charlton (due to the round red shape)
F as a 'Nazi Eagle'

Latest news is that the fans vote wasn't apparently the definitive outcome, but that it gave the club owners a steer as to which one to choose.

They've now narrowed it down from 6 options to 3 crests. Assuming fan votes on our forums are accurate, it's either A (Spurs),B (American Franchise) or E (Circular effort).

Hope they go for "E".

As it's the most "classic".
