What is the most number of games a club has played in a season?

I was reading a 1893 annual and a few clubs played over 50 games during the season in all competitions.

Have the number of fixtures gone up, down or remained the same over the years?

Has the loss of cup replays been offset by European Cups played in a group format etc for the top teams?

The most Rovers have played is 60 on a few occasions but in 1989-90 we played 61.
Think that's the most ever for us.

The most Leicester City have played in one season is 61 ....unless someone corrects me!

It was the 1991/92 season. We played:
46 in the League,
2 in the FA Cup
4 in the League Cup
6 in the Full Members Cup (ZDS Cup)
3 in the Play-Offs

Gary Mills played every game and I don't remember him moaning about it! Bow

I make it that Leeds played 65 games in the 74-75 season. They also managed to squeeze in 4 testimonial games and (at least) 3 friendlies.

They played 11 in March (1,5,8,11,15,19,22,25,27,29,31, plus 1 April).

Can't see today's premiership prima donnas managing that - no squad rotation in those days either!

If memory serves me correctly arsenal played 70 games in 79/80. They have reached final of FA and UEFA cup and had several replays in the 3rd round and semifinal of the FA Cup plus the duel legs of several rounds in the UEFA. I also believe Brian Talbot played in all our matches.

Derby played 75 games in season 92/93 (including 10 friendlies and 1 testimonial).
Problem exacerbated by playing all those two-legged affairs in reaching the Anglo-Italian Cup Final as well as the quarter-final of the FA Cup and another 4 ties in the League Cup.

Stafford Rangers 1971-72 - circa 75 games.

Northern Premier League - 46 games (Champions)
FA Trophy - 9 games (Winners)
FA Cup - 4 games
Northern Premier League Cup - 2 games
Non-League Championship - 2 games (Winners)
Staffordshire Senior Cup - 4 games (Winners)
Midland Floodlit Cup - circa 8 games

At the end of the season they were playing 3 games a week to complete their fixture. Probably the most successful season in the clubs history.

Everton played over 60 games each season from 1983-4 to 1987/8 apart from 86/7 if I remember correctly.

Rangers played 68 competitive matches in season 2007/08 plus 6 first team friendlies. There were other games but they weren't officially first team matches.

Chelsea will play 69 competitive games this season if they beat FC Basel tonight. That will be a Club record whether or not they get through tonight.

Guernsey are still going. They play their final four fixtures, all at home - tomorrow night, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. After playing 16 league matches in April that means that they will have played 20 league matches in 36 days!

After some mixed results, currently they lie second. Mathematically they still have a chance of winning their League. Unlikely as they need to win all four games and rely on Egham losing. They need two points to be sure of being runners up.

Normally only the Champions are promoted (as long as they have applied and their ground is passed fit). However, as I believe it, given the restructuring of the step 4 / 5 leagues they have a good chance of getting promoted automatically anyway to, I think, Isthmian League South.

It is a complicated beast and I do not fully understand it all but everything will be decided in mid May when the F A work it all out.

Grimsby Town played 68 games in season 1997-98

46 league games in the third tier,
3 in the play offs
6 in the league cup
6 in the FA cup
7 in the auto-windscreens shield

not a record but still quite impressive
