OK guys - husband had massive collection which wasn't catalogued anywhre. As husband now deceased, I need to catalogue with a view to selling etc.

What would you recommend to do this? Is there s/w outthere to do this? What is Programme Collector's database retailing at £22 like?

The collection is a mix of international, league, welsh league and other type football games.

To be honest you could place them into an Excel spreadsheet.

Maybe using the following headings:

Home Team
Away Team
Date/Season
Competition
Condition

Personally I wouldn't spend the £22.00, just as useful doing the above - especially if selling.

Good luck with selling, hope you get enough interest and good prices.

I definitely wouldn't spend the £22. Like kcs says just put them into an excel spreadsheet, even with programme collector's database you'll still have to input the data into it anyway.

Don't even bother with excel. Just creat a word document, and copy and paste onto here and await the offers to flood in!

I had a 22 paged list sent to me for example

Aston Villa 1981/2 v West Bromwich Albion team changes fold on back cover Very Rare.

Some people spend days typing lists and most of the time its dross.
So Jeavons unless its Pre 1960 or big match Dont bother Surprised

first of all sorry to hear about your loss.

as has been said above, the best thing to do would be either put everything into an Excel spreadsheet, or even just in a list/table on a word document.
personally id much rather read through a list simply saying the teams, season and condition

Although Mr. Bazzabaggies indicated that you shouldn't bother unless it's pre 1960, may I ensure you that a number of people would be interested in seeing a list of those programmes you have. There has been a lot of good advice offered and as KCS mentioned, good luck with selling and I hope you attain good prices.

Thumbs Up

Sorry to hear about your loss.

First thing I would do is to sort them by host club, and approximate period, and make a list at that level to start with, i.e. Aston Villa 25 home programmes 2000 - 2010, 30 programmes 1990-2000, etc

Do the same for international matches by national teams such as England and Wales, again by period.

In the above, there is unlikely to be many 'valuable' issues unless they are pre -1970.

If there are foreign programmes for, say England aways, or European games then list these separately.

If there is anything else which seems random, such a single or 4 pages sheets or 'special' event issues like cup finals then list them separately too.

Once you've drawn this up, put it all into a list and advertise it on here. Those who are interested in speciifc clubs etc will email you back, and it will help flush out the ones which may have more value.

Probably a good compromise, methinks. You could spend hours listing individual stuff that you may not shift.

Don't just disregard everything though as there may be some gems in there, however modern or old they are.

If you just want rid, you could even contact some dealers such as bazzabaggie, but they will probably want a similar list anyway.

Good luck whatever you decide

Hi

Thanks also for commiserations. Died November so not so raw now.

Thanks everyone for very helpful comments - especially about sorting and the comment re pre 1970's

Friend who is not that PC literate is going to catalogue for me or at least start sorting. I think then as he lives in London and I live in Cardiff, will ask him to sort.

Interesting that spreadsheet or word is proposed method.

Condition: ummmmmm - is there a helpful definition somewhere?

With regards to condition of programmes - here are some examples (i'll probably miss a few)

Mint - basically the item looks like it did when it was bought - prestine condition

centre fold - a vertical fold down the middle, usually when it's been stuffed in a pocket to shelter from the rain

tc - short for team changes. Some people liked to make a note of the players actually playing on the line ups part of the programme (usually on the back page)

ph - punched holes via a hole punch. Not very popular with many collectors

token removed/intact - one or two bigger clubs like Man United and Leeds had these magical numbered tokens as part of their programmes in the olden days, some people cut them out but the programmes are worth more if the token remains. Position of said token varies depending on club, and many didn't have them at all

Also slight crease, small stain, grubby mark/ fold mark, tiny tear, torn spine, digs to spine if a large modern programme.
Regards

Thanks to all who sent a pm - I think I have replied to everybody and I am touched by the messages of sympathy, interest expressed and offers of help.

Friend and I have come up with a strategy of sorting and this will happen in next couple of months then I will have a much better idea of what is there
