As the super-charged ball heads off into orbit, the 'Boro' centre forward takes a right hook from the opposing 'keeper as a quizzical defender looks on.......
With both clubs safe in mid-table, they played out a 2-2 draw in front of 13,123.

63 years ago (1951) and the FA Cup Final between Newcastle United and Blackpool.
This was Blackpool’s 2nd final appearance since the war but victory still eluded them as they went down by 2 goals to nil.
The programme is a standard Wembley Stadium issue comprising 20 pages.

70 years ago (1944) and the League War Cup Final 1st Leg between Blackpool and Aston Villa.
The programme is a standard 4 page issue with team line-ups in the centre and an advert for RHO Hills on the back cover.
My copy is rather tatty but better an original than one of the reproductions regularly seen on Ebay.
Blackpool, as holders of the cup, won 2-1 with Dodds scoring twice, but Villa won the 2nd leg 4-2 to take the trophy.

Back to 1964 and Lunn are at home to Ipswich Town. This was a testimonial match for manager Len Richley. He was manager of Lynn from 1959 until September 1965.
Lynn lost this match 2-4 in front of a crowd of 2371.

57 years ago and a Monday evening South-western Lge fixture at Mount Wise, Newquay with Penzance, who had already clinched the title, the visitors.
The 8 page programme is mostly advertising (note the one on the front cover for "Jimmy-The One"!) but the club notes and supporters' club notes contain some interesting snippets including the fact that there would be an exhibition of ball-control at half time from 6 year old football prodigy William Bennett.
Plenty scope for a coffee in Newquay - you could try the Collins Creamery, the "46" snack bar, the Cadoc Cafe, the Cosy Cafe, the Killacourt Cafe, the Cona Coffee Bar or, the one I'd opt for, The Coffee Pot. All of whom advertised in the programme.
These were heady days for Penzance FC and it's sad to see how far they've fallen since then. Second from the foot of the 2nd division, now, and playing to average crowds of around 60.

And I completely missed the day. I've clearly been asleep for the past week.
Must try harder... |

65 years ago (1949) and a 1st Division fixture between Stoke City and Blackpool.
The programme is a 12 page issue with club notes, notes on the visitors, portrait gallery featuring Alec Ormston, fixtures for league and reserves and just the one table for the 1st Division. There are rather a lot of adverts.
Stoke won 3-2 with goals from Mountford F. (penalty), Mountford G., and Peppitt. McCall and Shimwell (penalty) replied for Blackpool.

All proceeds going to the London Flood distress fund. There was a bit of rainfall in March that year.

65 years ago and 23,603 at The Valley to see a resounding 5-1 win for Derby. A hat-trick for Johnny Morris and one apiece for Jack Stamps and Billy Steel.
8 page programme issued. Advertising is comparatively unobtrusive and includes notice that season tickets for season 49/50 were available priced at five guineas.
Club notes bid farewell to assistant manager Robert Wright who had been offered (and accepted) the manager's job at Bristol City.
