Rovers reached the 6th round of the cup for only the 2nd time.
Sadly that was it as Fulham won the game 3-1 in front of 42,000.

62 years ago and a bad day out for the Rams going down 0-5 to an in-form Tottenham side in front of 44,388.

Walters, Bennett, Duquemin and Baily on target for the home team. A Bert Mozley own goal rounding off matters.

Usual large 4 page issue from Spurs. Interesting snippet about Jack Kirwan who, at 79, was the last surviving member of Spurs' 1901 Cup-winning team. He and his wife had fallen on hard times and the club were supporting an application to the Football League Benevolent Fund to help them out.

Not a problem any of today's rich young players will ever face.

68 years ago (1946) and a Football League North fixture between Sheffield United and Blackpool.

The programme is a 6 page slim style folded example with just team line ups and fixtures. The rest was made up of adverts including 3 different companies advertising razors and razor blades.

The home side won 4-2 in front of nearly 40,000 spectators with Jock Dodds, a former Blades favourite, scoring both Blackpool’s goals.

It's hard to quantify these things but, leaving aside issues for postponed games, this is probably the rarest Derby post-war home programme.

With the Rams already struggling in the table (in 21st place), this Wednesday afternoon kick-off saw a crowd of just 5,987 turn up to see a goalless draw with 2nd-placed Luton. Still the lowest post-war home attendance.

The fact that the Baseball Ground pitch was, according to the press report "a swamp of mud and water" apparently made no difference to what turned out to be an excellent game. It just made controlling the ball a wee bit tricky...

Standard 16 page programme issued includes detailed pen-pics on the Luton players, a match report on the visit to Leeds the week before and not a lot else.

Another postponed issue from 1999. Surprise surprise our pitch was waterlogged.

61 years ago (1953) and a Division 1 fixture between Burnley and Blackpool.

The programme, with it being a Tuesday fixture, was just 4 pages but without any adverts at all.

Blackpool won 1-0 with Perry getting the only goal.

23 years ago and the game of the day in Division 5 of the Basingstoke Sunday League as 3rd placed Sony Broadcast play leaders Portals .

The 6 page gatefold programme has masses to read - amazing, really, given the lowly status of the home club.

They admit, however, that they're having difficulties paying the £150/month pitch fees

The front cover at least changes the kick-off time from 10.30pm to 10.30am allowing the players to actually see the ball!

70 years ago (1944) and a War Cup 1st Rd tie between Blackpool and Everton.

This match also counted towards the Northern Section 2nd Competition.

The programme is a standard 4 page war time issue, printed on flimsy paper, and just showing the team line ups in the centre with the usual RHO Hills advert on the back cover.

Blackpool won 7-1 with goals from Dix 3, Dodds 2 and Mortensen 2.

For anyone who has the latest Blackpool Complete Record book, the dates of the 1943/4 home and away fixtures against Everton have been listed the wrong way around.

64 years ago and a Central League fixture at Villa Park.
Match ended in a 1-1 draw.

8 page programme issued (Vol 7 no 31) includes match reports on Villa v WBA, Barnsley res v Villa res and the third XI's game with Shrewsbury, all from the previous week. Tucked away on page 7 is yet another match report covering Villa amateurs v Mills Old Boys.

Great value for 3d.

As an aside, issue 4 of the Derby County Memorabilia magazine (due back from the printers this week) includes an article I've written covering a selection of programmes for matches between the Rams and Villa between 1924 and 1968.

As well as many other articles of interest, of course Smile

37 years ago (1977) and a schoolboy under 15 international between England and Northern Ireland.

The match was played at Blackpool’s Bloomfield Road ground.

Not many of the players on show made it to the big time but those that did included Gary Mills, Nicky Law and Mark Chamberlain.

The programme is 8 pages and was printed locally by United Printing Services, the printer of the Blackpool programme.

1990 and a single sheet programme for the John Ullman Cup 3rd Round tie between Tottenham Hotspur and Charlton Athletic.

A number of the youth team names went onto to have decent if not superstar careers in the game.
