56 years ago (1957) and a floodlight friendly between Workington and Blackpool.
I bet Blackpool wished they hadn’t agreed to this fixture as Workington ran out winners by 4 goals to 1.
Perry scored for the Seasiders and Robson (2), Purdon and Chisholm for the Reds.
An 8 page programme was issued which had some brief notes and lots of adverts.

1970 and a Mithras Cup 2nd round, 1st leg tie against the Metropolitan Police played at another wonderfully traditional non-league ground - Richmond Road, Kingston*
Maidenhead won 2-0. Single sheet issue.
* The Richmond Road ground was demolished in 1989 and redeveloped for housing. Kingstonian FC relocated to a brand new stadium - Kingsmeadow - the lease of which was purchased by AFC Wimbledon in 2003 and the clubs now groundshare. |

80 years ago and 6th placed Derby travel to White Hart Lane to take on league leaders Tottenham.
41,469 in attendance to see Jack Bowers and Dally Duncan on target in a 2-1 win for the Rams.
Usual 4 page Spurs issue of the era, the only advert being a very unobtrusive one from London Underground on page 3.
The editor's notes include a plea from a female fan who asks if gentlemen might consider not wearing their trilbies to the game as, being on the short side, such headgear obstructs her view!

75 years ago (1938) and a 1st Division fixture between Liverpool and Blackpool.
No clue whatsoever on the unusual pink cover to the season, date or opponents, but nevertheless a superb 20 page programme with lots of content.
Liverpool won the match 1-0.

26th November 1955 FA Amateur Cup 4th Qualifying Round tie between Ossett Albion and Yorkshire Amateurs at Queen's Terrace.
This was 3 years before Ossett Albion joined the Yorkshire League (then playing in the West Yorkshire League, having been formed in 1944) and I doubt if there is an earlier Ossett Albion programme in existence as this is also the first ever game played at their new ground, after previously groundsharing. It is also "No 5" !
Looks like the original owner may have been scouting certain away team players - not very complimentary about the visitor's Centre Forward !!

38 years ago and a NPL fixture between Worksop Town and Macclesfield Town, the home team coming out 3-1 winners.
12 page programme issued includes a full-page photo featuring fans about to commence the annual club sponsored walk. Tank-tops, platform soles, flares - they're all in evidence.
If the kids weren't scared out of their wits by the tiger on the front cover, there's a quiz for them on page 3 which would certainly tax their knowledge of the game.
Commendable effort from the club for 6p.

59 years ago (1954) and a 1st Division fixture between Cardiff and Blackpool.
Blackpool won 2-1 with goals from McKenna and Taylor.
McKenna was Matthews’ (and sometimes Perry’s) stand in and only made 25 appearances. This was one of only 2 1st team goals for the Seasiders.
A good 12 page programme was issued with an even split between content and adverts.

25 years ago and an early Sunday start for Gauldry v Strathkinness in the NE Fife Amateur League.
The combined population of these two villages is less than 2,000 and this was Gauldry's first league game of the season, the club only having been reformed earlier that year.
4 page (free) programme includes a full page photo of the home team's squad, all of whom are kitted out in Blackburn Rovers-type kit.

57 years ago (1956) and a friendly between England and Yugoslavia at Wembley.
This game was Stanley Matthews’ 50th cap.
England won 3-0 with goals from John Brooks and 2 from Tommy Taylor. Taylor actually started the match on the bench and came on for Johnny Haynes after 30 minutes.
Roger Byrne missed a penalty which was England's fourth consecutive penalty miss, all at Wembley.
A standard 16 page programme was issued.

Who did John Brooks play for?
I genuinely can't remember! _________________ http://www.flickr.com/photos/derby1884/sets/ |

26 years ago and a Scottish Junior Cup tie between Blantyre Celtic and Pollok.
4 page programme issued (spot the typo on the cover) has a few notes on the club's history on p.2, lineups on p.3 and a quick quiz on the back page.
There's also a brief "player profile" on midfielder Joe McGrath who states his favourite drink is a "black and tan". That takes me back. Was my very first pint. I never hear anyone ask for that these days, though.
(it was a mixture of McEwan's export and Sweetheart stout, in case anyone's wondering)

83 years ago (1930) and Blackpool’s first ever season in the top flight.
It was a very difficult season although Blackpool did manage to avoid relegation by 1 point with Leeds and Manchester United going down.
This match was away to Sheffield Wednesday who dished out a 7-1 thumping.
The Owls had also put 7 past Sunderland a few weeks earlier.
The programme is 16 pages with some superb adverts and plenty of reading.

This day in 1997 and to Wolverhampton for a West Midlands Lge fixture between Lucas Flight Controls and Walsall Wood reserves - both struggling in the relegation places in the league table.
16 page programme printed on very thick paper and split evenly between narrative and adverts.
The Lucas Sports Social Club's forthcoming attractions for December seem to cover all tastes - disco, jazz, folk and a comedy night.
