Post subject: Manchester United's Old Charity Shield Programmes
Reply with quote

Dear All,

I'm Ahmad Omar from Malaysia. Currently I'm new in collecting Manchester United programmes. However, currently I have managed to complete League Cup Final, Intercontinental Cup / Toyota Cup / Club World Cup Final and European Cup / Champions League Final programmes.

Now I'm considering to collect FA Charity / Community Shield programmes that involves Manchester United in the match, no matter win or lose. Hence, I need your help on this matter. Do you have any information where can I find the good reprinted version of 1908, 1908 Replay, 1911, 1948 and 1952 programmes? As I know all these 5 programmes now were the rarest and costliest among other FA Charity / Community Shield programmes involving Manchester United. Or is there any other Shield's programme that also rare after these first five?

Hope to hear from you soon.

Best Regards,

Ahmad Omar

All of these can be found on Ebay.

The Chelsea ones can be purchased on Ebay of reprinted Chelsea bound volumes from seasons 1905 onwards.
Same with the 1948 + 1951 as they have been reprinted as well..

All of your others are easy to get hold of.

Yes, eBay is my main source now. From my observation I'll not having problems to purchase programme of 1956 - 2013 on eBay. The main problem now is with the first 3 programmes (1908, 1908 replay and 1911). Chelsea Chronicle compilation is quite pricey as I just want 3 of these... Anyway, thank you for your reply.

Ya, it's Bristol, sorry for the misspell (actually in my mind is 'Bri'stol, but my finger was clicking 'Bri'ghton...) :p

No, no... I'm not searching for this programme, as I already have the cheapest reprinted copy for this one. As per subject, I'm searching for Charity Shield programme.

I was just thinking the other day, some would say the hobby is in decline, and prices are heading downwards. I wonder if the fanatical , wealthy far east premiership fans would start snapping up memorabilia . Of course they would only be interested in the Manchester's and the Liverpool's etc. I wonder if a rich Chinese Manchester United fan would buy this old programme ? Or would they have no interest whatsoever in the history of the game , only the razzmatazz of today ?

Actually I don't have any idea what will Chinese businessman think about this subject. As I think collecting programme is not the main interest of oriental peoples. Even most of them are more obsess with stamps. Just ask any of China people you know what is the price for the a piece of 'Red Monkey' stamp. Then you'll realised some of it were more expensive than a programme. Also, although football are played around the world, but only in UK specifically, and Europe generally, got this 'ritual' of collecting match programme.
