1995, and a short trip for Blackpool to their neighbours Blackpool Mechanics (now AFC Blackpool) of the North West Counties League.
Blackpool won the match 5-2 and a 16 page programme priced 50p was issued.

28 years ago....August 1st 1985
The fourth lowest crowd ever to watch a United 1st Team at any level.
100 hardy souls, witnessed an end to end classic.
The final score was 0-0

This day in 1972.
Schalke 04 v Derby County.
A chance for the Rams to play some top-level continental opposition prior to their first-ever season in Europe.
20 page glossy A4 programme issued. Plenty to read but entirely in German. The articles look very interesting, though. Schalke had pushed Bayern Munich all the way for the league title the previous season, yet their attendances had dropped by more than 50%. Seems odd.
This was the second successive year the Rams visited Gelsenkirchen. Both programmes are hard to find nowadays.

66 years ago and the annual charity match at Easter Road between an Edinburgh Select XI and a top English club. 1947 saw Derby venture north to challenge for the Allison Cup (as presented to the winners).
4 page unpriced programme issued. The celebrations started at 2pm with a pipe band and a communal sing-along to old favourites such as "I Love A Lassie" and "There's An Old Mill By The Stream" before the teams were introduced to the Secretary Of State for Scotland (Joseph Westwood).
No doubt a fine time was had by all.
The Edinburgh XI was rather dominated by Hibs players (look at that forward line!) and I don't know why we had to borrow Kilmarnock's 'keeper.
If anyone knows the score/attendance, please let me know.

Continuing the friendlies against North East sides in 1990, Blackpool played Dunston Federation Brewery at Federation Park.
An informative 32 page programme was issued but without the date or opponents on the cover which is why I have also copied the inside page.
Blackpool won this one 6-0.

A pre-season friendly between Gravesend & Northfleet (now Ebbsfleet) and A Derby County eleven.
Gravesend & Northfleet had just won the Southern League Division One South and Derby had just won the Football League championship, but most of the players that played in that game 38 years ago were reserves.

Four page programme for a friendly game, Merthyr Tydfil v Bournemouth, played at the pen-y-pound stadium, Abergavenny (home of Abervagenny Thursday FC).
Merthyr had just won their 6th Southern league championship in 88/89, giving them promotion to the Football Conference.

26 years ago and a first round tie in the Burnley Hospital Cup between Burnley United and Wagon & Horses FC.
8 page programme issued.
This tournament appears to have been played on an annual basis up to 1939, then again in 1954 and 1958 but not since. So, if this was it being resuscitated after 30 years, then I hope the holders of the trophy, Bank Hall Miners, were able to find it and return it!
There were 32 first round ties to be played that week involving clubs from Burnley, Bacup, Rossendale, Padiham and Colne so quite a logistical task organising it.

28 years ago and to the Lochaber area. Home of, arguably, the most picturesque football ground in the UK.
1985 saw Fort William elected to the Highland League and, 3 days prior to their opening fixture, they welcomed Clydebank to Claggan Park for a hastily-arranged friendly.
4 page issue costing 10p. Plenty to read, including an interesting history of Fort William FC (formed quite recently - in 1972).
That first season saw the Fort finish in 12th place - heady days given their struggles to finish anything but last in the table since the mid-90s.
Present-day manager Danny Conlon is listed in the home team's line-up.

A trip to the North East 42 years ago saw Blackpool play English side Berwick Rangers, one of only a handful of teams in the world to play in a national league other than their own country's.
A decent Blackpool side lost this one 2-0.
An 8 page programme was issued.

Apart from the various Welsh clubs, the others I can think of are Monaco, FC Vaduz and San Marino Calcio.
Might there also be a Hong Kong club plays in China? Only a guess. _________________ http://www.flickr.com/photos/derby1884/sets/ |

In 1992, and for the 3rd year running, Blackpool played some of their pre-season friendlies in the North East of England.
On this day Blackpool played Bishop Auckland at their original home of Kingsway. This was one of the oldest grounds in the country, and unusual because it was shared with the town’s cricket club with one of the four sides being a cricket pitch.
Blackpool’s connections in playing friendlies in the North East was mainly down to Billy Ayre, the Blackpool manager at this time, who was a native of Gateshead and who played for The Bishops in the 1970s.
The programme is 24 pages.

26 years ago, local friendly derby between the Sheffield clubs.
Sharrow, did Sheffield win their bid to host the games?

Sheffield hosted the 1991 World Student Games and the Don Valley Stadium was built specifically as an athletics stadium for these games. |
