Hi everyone,

As you may know I'm collecting programmes from the games which recorded the highest home attendance of each of the 92 English league clubs. As 31 clubs recorded their record attendances before World War II, I would like to find out their Post War attendance records.

Can you help ???

Thanks to your replies on the previous forum I have found the details for Exeter, Sheffield United & Newcastle's post war attendance records. Very Happy

I still need to find: Bradford, Burnley, Reading, Leicester, Blackburn, Oldham, Huddersfield, Bolton, Sunderland, Cheltenham, Sheffield Wed., Man City, Bristol City, Chelsea, Barnsley, Plymouth, Grimsby, Millwall, West Brom, Stoke, Chesterfield, Charlton, Brentford, Tottenham, Preston, Fulham, Wolves and Birmingham. Confused

I know Chelsea had a 90,000 + crowd for a friendly v Moscow but that was an unofficial figure. Does anyone know the highest official crowd at Stamford Bridge since 1945?

Thanks in advance for any replies to this thread and I'll let you know how my collection progresses once I have the information.

Cheers me dears !!

Alrite mate, when did the Taylor report come into effect?

The Hillsbrough disaster happened on 15th April 1989.

On Wednesday 3rd May 1989, Everton played Liverpool at home infront of 45,994. I think this may of been too soon after the disaster for the report to be finished.

Our highest home attendance after that fateful season of 1988-89 was the following season in 1989-90 when again we played Liverpool at home infront of 42,453.

Before that our record home attendance was 78,299 at home to Liverpool on Saturday 18th September 1948.

In 'Premiership years' our highest home attendance is once again against Liverpool in the 2004-05 season when 40,552 saw us beat them 1-0.

Hi everyone,

Scratch off the Spurs record. I've found it was 71,853 for a FA Cup game v West Brom in 1947/48.

Try this.........

Go to Wikipedia.

Type in the club.........Scroll down to "Club Records" Highest attendances will be there.......Do the same for every club you are looking for.

Cheers for all the info people,

I knew programme collectors would come up with all the goods as we have a wealth of info at our fingertips.

This is an updated list of clubs I still need info for:

Bradford, Burnley, Reading, Leicester, Blackburn, Oldham, Huddersfield, Bolton, Sheffield Wed, Manchester City, Barnsley, Plymouth Grimsby, Millwall, West Brom, Stoke, Chesterfield, Charlton, Brentford, Preston, Fulham and Birmingham.

Remember, I'm looking for each clubs highest 'home' attendance since 1945 as their record crowds were set before WWII.

Keep those stats rolling in Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

It would be a useful exercise to archive these attendances. Does anyone else have any of the Association of Football Statistician Reports which have the most gobsmackingly football statistics you'll ever come across. A certain John Motson was a member prior to it's demise, now you know where he gets all his info from.
I have about 130 of these reports, they are each about 40 pages crammed to the rafters with the weird and wonderful. If you ever thought your compulsion for football verged on the edge of madness, you're normal in comparision to some of these guys. Brilliant reading, and if you ever get the chance to buy the odd one or twon on ebay, treat yourself...

Grimsby's highest post war attendance was for a league match with Stockport County on Good Friday 1952 (April 11/52) 26,605. (Until the 80's Grimsby nearly always played at home on Good Friday because of the town's links to the fishing industry and the numbers of trawlers in port for the Easter fish sales).
The highest attendance I can find belongs to the Grimsby v Wolves F.A. cup tie on 20.2.37 which was 31,651.

God alone knows how they managed to cram 31,651 into the Theatre of Fish!!

Thanks Grimsbybarralad,

Another great fact !! Laughing

I only need to find 9 post war club record attendances for the complete record of all current 92 English League clubs:

Birmingham City, Bradford City, Charlton Athletic, Fulham, Millwall, Oldham Athletic, Plymouth Argyle, Preston North End and Reading.

If anyone can find the highest home attendance since 1945 for any of the above clubs it would be much appreciated.

I can then put them all on a spreadsheet and if anyone wants a copy I could send it out.

Keep Hunting !!!

Hi, I'll ask on our club message board but I'm fairly certain that Oldham's post-war record attendance is 41,733 v Liverpool in the FA Cup 4th round on Jan 27th 1962.

As if by magic, a programme from the game appeared for sale on ebay last night.

Hi everyone,

MERRY CHRISTMAS !!!!!!

Any fans of the following teams on board yet? :

Birmingham City, Bradford City, Charlton Athletic, Fulham, Millwall, Plymouth Argyle, Preston North End or Reading.

I'm looking for the post-war record attendance for a home game for each of the above 8 teams. CAN YOU HELP ??

Thanks to everyone who has replied to this thread - I'm building my collection nicely with all your help. Let's see if I can find the last 8 elusive records to help track down all 92 English records and their programmes. (Then, we'll start with Scotland !)

Have a good one and a very prosperous and fulfilling 2009.

CHEERS !!! Very Happy Very Happy

Hi mate,

Yes, I add the newly promoted teams record attendance programme to my wants list and put the relegated teams programme into a section in my collection marked 'Non league'.

I am hoping to expand next into SPL and Scottish League teams then move on to expand into Conference National, then Conference North & South, etc.

As with everyones collection it will just keep on expanding as time progresses.

At the moment, I'm around halfway to collecting the English 92. Very Happy
