Came across it by chance.

Does anyone know of an older one?

Especially as it states that it is Volume 1 Number 19.

These Sheffield programmes are not uncommon, even for this great age, but of course the opposition in this case ( Celtic ) makes it very much sought after.

Pretty sure the oldest known is 1872, i don't know for which match though there was an article in programme monthly about it years ago, the programme turned up at a jumble sale, there is also a programme known for the 1873 England v Scotland plus a 1868 programme for Sheffield FC turned up on ebay a few years ago but not sure if it had anything to do with football or was just for an annual end of season sports day

Aye, common as muck, United programmes from 1897-8 Confused

I believe its England v Scotland from 1873 is the oldest known programme as Cossie has above.

Might be wrong, but wasn't there also a Queens Park v Wanderers programme from 1875.

Incidentally here's United's first.

But they not that rare. I mean you are just as likely to come across a Sheffield Untied late 1890s/1900s than a Sunderland 1930s. Not saying they not desirable, just they are not uncommon.

I believe there is a Wales v Scotland 1876 programme in Wrexham Museum.

I don't think you can justify saying that Sheffield United 1897-8 season is not rare, I can't recalling seeing too many recently. After all, it's not every season Sheffield United were champions, infact it's the only season we were champions. Of course you are correct in saying the opposition plays a significant degree as to the value especially in regards to this United/Celtic programme, this was the first of two games against Celtic that season, with the winners being pronounced 'Champions of Great Britain'. Incidentally, the Blades won. Smile

maybe i was generalising a bit. I know a very old Sheffield U v Wed reserve was on ebay for ages and couldn't make £50. I'm not knocking it, it must be great picking up pre wars that cheap. Any Championship winning season always adds to the value of programmes.
I started a list of oldest known programmes if anyone can care to find the thread again.
