I have a programme from a Sheff Wendy reserve game from 1922, played at Bramall Lane. The Mrs and her dad are Wendy fans, and they did the Hillsborough ground tour last year. They were told by the old guy taking the tour that Wendy used to play their reserve games at Bramhall Lane, but they can't remember why. Can anybody tell me why this was? Certainly couldn't see it happening today!! Cheers, Mick.

Apparently, the local pig farmer who owned Hillsborough, (The Owlerton Piggery) visited the local meat market once a fortnight, this enabled him to clear the pitch of pigs for a few hours and thus allowed the first team to play.

However, this courtesy didn't extend to the reserves.

as Bramall Lane was used mainly for Cricket , the winter months often meant little turnover in terms of gate receipts at Sheff Utd so Wednesday reserves at least ensured there was a decent crowd every week .
That said most reserves were still played at H'Boro.

It depended who the 'Massive' were playing. Laughing

Is it a United programme cover, like the one below?

This is a Wharncliffe Charity Cup Game between Wendy and Donny, courtesy of forum member treble99.

It was a reserve team competition for the Sheffield clubs and local sides and many of the finals were held at United, (after we had failed dismally...again)

Yes, this is it, Sheff Wendy reserves v Barnsley reserves, 20th March, 1922. The cover threw me at first, I thought somebody had taped parts of 2 programmes together!

Yes, it's a Wharncliffe Charity Cup game.

Mick could I ask you for a scan of the cover, for the old website.

Any help would be much appreciated.

[email protected]

best regards, Sharrowblade
