It would appear Vintage Steve is on a mission! Whilst I don't doubt that personalities are coming into this debate, there's absolutely nothing wrong with dealers buying off ebay to sell on elsewhere, surely? I get 90% of my stuff off ebay nowadays because it's cheap, can be done from the armchair, and there are some genuine bargains to be had.
There's two completely different markets out there, and there's sufficient people around who've worked it out in order to make a few bob, myself included.
I tend to buy items that I know will be able to be sold later on, I specialise in effect. It's no good doing it with 1960's FA Cup Finals or modern European issues, but if you're prepared to put a couple of hours a day in, day in day out you'll pick the bargains up.
One of the areas I try and specialise in is pre 1960's non league in the FA Cup proper. I was checking back through the advanced search on ebay today to see how things had been going whilst I've been away on holiday for 3 weeks. In the pre 1950's FA Cup programmes a 1939 FACup Final had sold for about the £330 mark, whilst another one had sold for £100 less, and there was little to choose between the two.
Are you saying Steve, that because one programme sells for £250 that nobody should sell theirs for a penny above that? Doesn't make sense, and no business could possibly use ebay prices as a guide as there's simply no logic there.
If people don't want to pay a particular person's prices for programmes they don't have to, but let's not get into a positin whereby people try to hold the moral high ground over programme prices because two people sell them at different prices, as otherwise there would be widespread accusations of programme dealers acting as a cartel if they sold everything at the same price?
Food for thought.....

A very reasoned, polite response.
Interesting points raised.
Although I wouldn't necessarily pay £38, I certainly don't see it as excessive, but agree there are bargains to be had!

You've obviously missed the irony of my response to Barry's post. Even he managed to see the funny side. Shake

Regarding the points that you've made, I'm all in favour of an open market, it's what us Tories preach and practice. However, for a market to function properly there has to be a degree of realism. far too many run of the mill programmes, even those from the 40s and 50s, are simply over priced by some dealers. Yes, a programme is only worth what one person is willing to pay for it, but to a new collector entering the hobby, it must be an absolute minefield. Ebay has uncovered many "secrets" of the hobby by exposing the myths surrounding the availability and abundance of those items that were previously thought to be rare. As you mentioned regarding pre-war FAC Finals, you can pay top dollar one week, but if you're prepared to wait until the next one comes along, you can purchase for a lot less. For the hobby to flourish, those purchasing programmes at hugely inflated prices, shouldn't discover later that they've been truly ripped off, as their interest will no doubt wane. You only have to look at the bizarre price guides that have been issued by Programme Monthly in recent years to see that ebay has changed football programme collecting for ever.

I thought irony usually involved a few self deprecating observations, or the like Steve, not a couple of prices and a smiley?
Anyway, good to see a debate opened up on pricing as I think it's long overdue - especially the PM stance you mention. Nod

I reckon this is the first time I have come across someone openly admitting they are a Tory, I have more respect for muggers. It least you get an opportunity to fight back.

It seems there are a few troublemakers on here who go out of there way to ridicule others. When members list things on here the last thing they want is someone to take the pizz..
Ive got my eye on one or two of these pizz takers and i shall be waiting to pounce.

For Sale
Nothampton v Thames 1930/1 £6
Sheffield United v Darwen 1882 £12..
Cardiff v West Ham 1920/1 £8.
Liverpool v Loughborough 1895/6 £12.

all offers welcome by the pizz takers on here only .
