Is there anywhere with decent information about Pinnace cards? I've 17 Exeter City players but no idea how many there were. The back of the cards says once you collected 100 you could send off for team cards, but I've never seen any of these team cards at auction.

Any help appreciated please.

Hi Paul,

There are 2 excellent books on history/idex of players etc, The Pinnace Collection by the association of football statisticians in 1986 abd the book I have Half-Time by David Thompson which relates to football and cigarette cards, 1890-1940.

I bought a collection of about 600 of these things abot 6 years ago, but have got rid of most of them. Still got about 100 or so odds and sods.

There are 224 in the cricketers 'set' published in 1924 and 2462 football ones published in 1920.

The Exeter cards are numbered 53-6,120,341,853-60,867,1110,1206,1564.

Looks as though youre missing one card Paul.

regards, Mark

Thanks Mark, that is useful. Have found David Thompson's book on ebay. Can't see the other one though, will have a look wider on the internet.

I have 'THE PINNACE COLLECTION' book. Cost me a pretty penny a while ago.

I'll have a root through and let you know which Exeter players are included together with their numbers.

Are you also aware that there were variations? Sometime players appeared twice, for two separate teams? Cases in point are Joe Walter who appeared on the cards for Huddersfield and Brittle Rovers, as did Charlie Slade (HTFC/Brittle), Clem Stephenson (HTFC/Aston Villa) and Edward Taylor (HTFC/Oldham Athletic)

AND ... did you know that there were medium size cards? And postcard sized 'Cabinet' cards? Both of these latter two sizes are very rare indeed.

If you go to my website (link below) you will find examples of these cards.

I also forgot to mention that thet there were a number of different 'backs' to these cards, each representing a different set; the earliest set had what was known as a 'brown oval', then there was the 'black oval', then 'double-line/frame' back, then 'Address Pinnace' and 'Address Photo'. So there will be multiple issues and also variants when players transferred clubs.
That's a lot of collecting to do!

Anyway, the Exeter cards are listed in the book as follows ...

54. J. Dockray
56. R. H. Pym
120. J. Graham
853. J. Green
855. F. Brown
856. A. V. Green
857. E. Bullock
858. H. Fryer
859. F. Newman
860. R. Gaskell
1110. A. Mathieson
1206. H. Kirk
1556. J. Mitton
1557. H. Crockford
1558. J. Rigby
1559. E. Bell
1560. A. Matthews
1561. C. Vowles
1562. H. Clarke
1563. R. Pollard
1564. G. Shelton

So that's quite a lot to go at!
Also be aware that the 'higher number' cards, ie those which are 4-digits, are usually more expensive to buy.

Well, according to THE PINNACE COLLECTION, of the cards listed by Mark above, they appear to actually be ...

53. J. H. Feebery (Brighton & HA)
55. J. Coleburne (Swindon)
341. E. Crompton (Bristol Rovers)
854. T. Edge (Blackpool, albeit in Exeter kit)
867. W. Devlin (Newport County)

All of those are identified by actual pictures in the book but, of course, these could be some of the variants that I mentioned earlier, so they could well be available with Exeter City identified as the club.

These cards are an absolute minefield! Very Happy

Paul,

I have 10 different LARGE size Exeter City pinnace cards similar in size to a postcard.

They are :

53 - J.H. Feebery
54 - J. Dockray
55 - J. Coleburne
853 - J. Green
854 - T. Edge
855 - F. Brown
856 - A.V. Green
857 - E. Bullock
858 - H. Fryer
859 - F. Newman

They all have a brown mark on the backs where they have more than likely been removed from an album - not as bad as you would imagine though.

The photos on the front are all nice and clear.

I collect cigarette & trade cards on Blackpool FC and have 11 different BFC large postcard sizes cards.

I think the medium size ( A&BC chewing gum size ) pinnace cards are far harder to locate - in only have 6 of these.

I have the full set of 18 of the small pinnace cards, many in the different backs as well, ie oval, pinnace, photo etc

I am open to offers for the 10 Exeter cards I have but would of course prefer to swap them for cards I need - PM me if interested

Happy Collecting !

John

So there you have it! Between us, Mark and John and I have provided proof positive that there were indeed many variants and there could be any number of players representing your team spread across the five different issues of this wonderful set of cards!
