Been to an auction this morning and the following lot came up - How much less comission do you think they fetched. I will put the answer down later.

Football Interest. A collection of Football Association (FA) enamelled gold and gilt metal pin badges, including twenty four 9ct gold badges dating from season 1912-1913, some with dates, and including England v Italy 1934, and enamelled gilt metal pin badges for FA Cup Final 1911, England v Scotland 1911, England v Scotland, England v Wales and England v Ireland 1912, and others.

I’ve just checked too and they went for more than my guess but still with a possible profit if sold in the right place. I wouldn’t be surprised to see these turn up split into smaller or individual lots at somewhere like Sportingold. Chris Williams and others look out for lots such as these with an eye on a quick profit. It can be a little annoying for the collector who takes the time to travel to an auction and is bid up by a dealer or dealers on the phone. With the internet nowadays most keen collectors and dealers know what’s coming up at local non specialist auctions and it is difficult to get a real bargain. Dealers have their maximum so the collector goes to the next bid a wins the lot. This happened to me towards the end of last year with a lot of about 10 pre-war progs. Because of the phone bidding I paid about £500 more than I would have done without the dealers interest. I wanted three programmes for my collection, swapped a couple in a private exchange, sold a few to recoup some of my outlay and have a couple of spares which may go for auction later. So I done ok, but I can’t get it out of my mind that it would have been much better without the £500 bidding against the dealers.

Right they went for £2600 to an internet bidder with comission added on it adds up to approx £3500, which works out at about £100 per badge. I was speaking to someone there who runs his own sporting memorabilia business and he bought 2 other lots (Rosettes / cloth badges).
He seemed to think that metal badges like these FA ones will not fetch as much as people think.
But we shall see.

tommy much as i understand what you are saying i find it hard to see what you mean.
you were run up by a phone bidder which you presume was a dealer but not sure.
you then became in effect a dealer yourself as you swapped a couple and sold a couple and are still holding a couple which you will probably put in auction.
that's what a dealer does so are you a dealer but just didn't make as much as you would have liked as they cost you £500 more than you might have got them for.
if you had got them cheaper would you have taken less for the couple you sold.i think not!!
ps i am just playing devils advocate

Sorry Tommy, going to have to side with Treble on this one. Experience suggests at auction that it is collectors who push the price up and not dealers after all, as you stated, they are looking to make a profit.
It's worth remembering, that at times, dealers at auctions, are acting on behalf of someone else.

There are exceptions, I can understand some Leeds collectors getting frustrated, anyone who has witnessed Mr Hewitt & Mr Lazenby going up against each other this year will know what I mean.

Forgive my ignorance, is Tony Lazenby a dealer? Does he specialise in Leeds progs??

Anyone have a catalogue, website add, or email address for him??

Although not been to an auction I have seen Leeds issues go for more than I expected (a lot more) so I guess this was the time!

P.S does Tony Lazenby sell on eBay??

TonyLazenby is one of the original Leeds collectors, back in the late 70s he was complete home and away back to 46/7 and has loads of pre war in his collection, like all serious collectors he turned to selling his spares. Not a full time dealer but has now retired from work and has a stall at a few of the Yorkshire fairs. Yes he sells on Ebay but also does a catalogue every now and again. I have his contact details at home, will give them to you later on.

His ebay signon is hollowman45 or something similar, he also collect Leeds rugby league.
