Spent an hour yesterday at an antique fair in a hotel in the posh part of Aberdeen. Looking for an old chess set but no luck.
Anyway, the dealer right at the back had a big boxful of Aberdeen homes ranging from 1966 to 1978. Idly thumbing my way through them, I noticed each were priced at a fiver (!!).
Perhaps he spied a sale (or just someone passing the time) cos he came up to me and said "interested in any?".
I explained how I'd been collecting for a wee while now and that a fiver each was perhaps a bit OTT.
"Okay, 3 for a tenner, then" he replied.
I passed.

Maybe I'm a bit out of touch - was that a rip-off? Or are AFC homes suddenly in big demand?

If they'd been 50p each, I'd have taken £20 worth as I love the Pittodrie cover designs of that era.

The 60's ones are probably £2-£3 each these days, maybe more for certain issues? 70's not so much.

I go to various antiques and ephemera fairs in the south-east and it is fair to say that valuing sporting memorabilia is not one of the strong points of many of the dealers.

One fair in London has a couple of dealers that have hundreds of bog standard league matches from the 1960s and 1970s priced at between £3 to £5 each - the lower end being teams that they are not familiar with whilst the big price tickets are reserved for the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea !!

However you simply have to look through them in case there is a hidden gem in there.

In truth, it seems to me as if general dealers see football as a licence to print money and price accordingly. Most of the stuff is worth a fraction of what they want but there's generally something in there that, if you know your stuff, you'll pick up for a song.
