(Easter) Saturday 5th April 1958
Division III South
Newport County 0 Crystal Palace 0
Gate: 4,118
The table shows how close it was in the middle with the dividing line separating next season's Divs 3 & 4 with 8 games to go. County finished 11th and safe with 48 points, one ahead of Colchester who also made the cut, while Cobblers and Palace were the top two to drop into Div 4 with 44 and 43 pts respectively. Palace had 2 really pivotal games against QPR coming up - they lost them both.
As mentioned on the same page, the front cover shows recent action from County v Brentford, won by the Bees 2-1. |

Queens Park Rangers 1 (Conway Smith, pen) - 1 Cardiff City
5 April, 1952
Gate: 17,827
QPR were in the doldrums, literally when this game came around. This was the first of the final six games and even finishing with three wins, two losses and this draw, they were unable to continue their brief four season stint in the 2nd Division. In the end, QPR were relegated back to Division 3 South, finishing last on goal difference to Coventry City.

Saturday 6th April 1957
Division III South
Ipswich Town 4 Crystal Palace 2 (Murray, Deakin)
Gate: 12,559
Thanks largely to Ted Phillips, who had scored 41 goals by the time of today's game, Ipswich were well placed to challenge for the top spot but even so, with just 7 games left, they trailed neighbours Colchester by 6 points. But the last 7 games produced this result for the top 3.
1st - Ipswich 13 pts = 59 pts - goal avge 1.87
2nd - Torquay 9 pts = 59 pts - goal avge 1.39
3rd - Colchester 6 pts = 58 pts
And Palace? 6pts = 40 pts = 20th
But they had a say in the promotion stakes as they hosted Torquay on the last day - the Gulls had to win to go up for the first and only time in their history - but they could only draw and so Ipswich went up and then they went up again and then they won the league in 1962. You have to wonder what would have happened had Torquay gone up... a "sliding doors" moment. |

6th April, 1957
Oldham Athletic 1 (Murray) Derby County 2 (Ryan, Brown)
att: 10,265
7th win in 8 games for Derby who were now in a two horse race for the Third Div North title with Accrington.
6th April, 1969
Lewes v FC Blois (Friendly)
The 2/6 programme price looks high but then, of course, it was a Sunday so the law of the land, as it stood, necessitated including entrance fee within the price of the programme. Or something like that.

Saturday 7th April 1945
Friendly
Crystal Palace 3 (Wilson 3), Tottenham Hotspur 1 (Gurr)
Gate: ?
Runaway League South leaders Spurs had beaten Palace 3-1 twice in the regular season, but on this league-free weekend a friendly at Selhurst gave Palace a win by the same score, the Spurs' scorer is Gurr but as far as I can see he didn't play any League football for Spurs or anyone else. But they did have several 1st team regulars, as did Palace as well as a few typical loanees.
Hat-trick man for Palace was left winger Albert Wilson, who joined Palace from Mansfield in January 1939 and completed that season, and the three in 39/40 before War broke out - other than those games, his record shows only war-time appearances and he left the club to join his home-town side Rotherham in 1946.

Scottish League
1st Division
Raith Rovers v Stirling Albion
A visit to the Kingdom of Fife but there was to be no joy for Albion as Raith ran out 2-1 winners.
Season highlights were the introduction of floodlights to Annfield and reaching the Semi Final of the League Cup....didn't stop us being relegated again though! |

Love that Raith Rovers image!
(Easter) Monday 7th April 1958
Division III South
Colchester United 1 Crystal Palace 1 (Berry)
Gate: 9,528
An important game for Colchester not to lose as they battled to finish just above the Div 4 drop line while Palace floundered just below. Palace scorer was Peter Berry, younger brother of Johnny of Man Utd who was badly injured just 2 months earlier in the Munich air crash and never played again. Peter left Palace after 7 years at the end of the season to join Ipswich, having scored 25 goals in 161 games for the Glaziers.

Thanks Pete
Have a few Albion away to Raith around that time. The paper used appears to be a bit thicker than the standard so the programmes keep in fantastic condition despite the years. I agree, the artwork on the front is great.

7th April, 1939
Portsmouth 1 Derby County 3 (Dix 2, Duncan)
att: 36,822
The victory kept Derby in third place, though well behind leaders Everton.
Pompey (with the Cup Final on their mind?) still in a bit of relegation trouble though they escaped comfortably enough in the end.
One or two typos in the Rams' lineup!
7th April, 1958
Welsh League - Div.1 South
Aberystwyth Town v Treharris Athletic
The clubs ended the season 16th and 15th respectively, Abergavenny Thursdays the title winners.
