5th March, 1966

Northampton Town 2 (Lines, Hudson) Leeds United 1 (O'Grady)

att: 21,548

All three goals came in a 4 minute spell in the first half, the winner from George Hudson on his debut having signed from Coventry.

5th March, 2011

Central Midlands Lge

Phoenix v South Normanton Athletic

Extremely impressive, almost ad-free, 20 page programme issued on glossy paper for the visit of the league leaders.
This was the home side's debut at this level though, according to the club history, they needed to change their name not once but twice in order to "satisfy administrative requirements". So they finally decided to revert to the name they were formed by in 1920.

Saturday 6th March 1976

FA Cup 6th round

Sunderland 0 Crystal Palace 1 (Whittle)

Gate: 50,850

Something to read on the train (which broke down)

The winning goal by Alan Whittle, and dressing room celebrations on a great day for Palace.

Due to the train failing to make it, loads of us missed most of the first half, but got in in time to see the goal even though me and a mate were in the wrong end so had to keep quiet! But did that matter? Nah!

6th March, 1965

FA Amateur Cup Q/final

Alvechurch 1 (Mason), Enfield 3 (Thomas, Desmond, Broomfield)

att: 10,750 (though likely more in the ground than that). By some margin, a record attendance at Lye Meadow (where the club play to this day).

It's not just the FA Cup that has giant-killers. In 1965, Midland Combination club Alvechurch made the headlines when, having disposed of Stratford Town and Norton Woodseats, they eliminated first Walthamstow Avenue then Wealdstone to set up a home tie with Enfield.

As can be seen from the cuttings, it certainly aroused the interest of the public with tickets ending up on the black market. Church's right back John Preece probably thought he was safe enough arranging his wedding for noon that day - to his credit he managed that and to play in the match.

Alvechurch actually went one better the next season, reaching the semi-finals.......and eliminating Enfield on the way.

Wednesday 7th March 1962

Division III

Bradford PA 2 Crystal Palace 0

Gate: 3,606

As reported on the 3rd inst, Johnny Byrne left Palace so this programme shows him up front but sadly that didn't happen, and Palace came unstuck at the Avenue who had that tasty package of Ham and Spratt as their right-wing partnership. By the time the season ended the 2 teams had swapped places with BPA 11th and Palace 15th. Probably the most telling statistic here though was the gate - a sure sign that times were getting tough for the Avenue.

Saturday 8th March 1952

Division III South

Ipswich Town 1 Crystal Palace 1 (McGeachie)

Gate: 10,352

2 sides in lower mid-table shared the spoils as Palace right half and captain George McGeachie, an ever-present, scored his only goal that season that wasn't a penalty (of which there were 4). This was his sole season at the club, and his last in league football after a career that began in 1937 at St Johnstone. Palace ended up in 19th place with Ipswich 2 points and 2 places ahead, a marked improvement for the Glaziers. George will be in this photo somewhere - it shows new manager Laurie Scott with his charges in October 51. Just no idea which one is George!

8 March 1930

Clapton Orient v Norwich City

Result: 0 - 0

Wonderful cartoons on the cover of the Clapton Orient Chronicle of Current Events. The images of the Orient goalkeeper, Garland Wells, are not too flattering and nor is the suggestion that he was looking for his spearmint in the long grass when Fulham scored in the previous week’s fixture.

The cartoons aren’t politically correct by today’s standards with Orient being referred to as “The Chinks”. I must admit I didn’t get the reference at first, but it’s obviously a nickname because Clapton are from the Orient. I haven’t heard that as a nickname for Orient in modern times. Is it ever still used?

The press photo from the game has been signed by 7 of the 8 players highlighted but not whoever headed that ball.
Never figured out who he was - let me know if anyone recognises him.

Saturday 9th March 1963

Division III

Notts County 0 Crystal Palace 2 (Dowsett 2)

Gate: 5,536

Two amazing forward lines there for Div 3 and credit to the Palace back line for keeping a clean sheet. An excellent win for the Glaziers, starved of action in this awful winter. Back on 2nd Feb, 5 weeks ago, I posted the Swindon v Palace programme. This game today was their next game. So 2 contradictory adjectives apply: "rusty" and "fresh". Fresh wins. County finished 7th, and Palace, who were 2nd bottom in today's programme, ended up 11th.
