Thursday 25th February 1960

Division IV

Workington 1 Crystal Palace 1 (Woan)

Gate: 3,687

A very nice, respectful article running over 2 pages by someone at the Reds, worth a read.

An unusual Thursday fixture, arranged for Palace to play here and at Barrow 48 hours later on Sat 27th. A sort of Cumberland Tour. The same thing happened also in 58/9, on March 14th and 16th. I must admit I hadn't noticed this before. Was this a condition fixed by some clubs, maybe, at the time of Div 4 coming into being after the Div 3 N/S was dropped? Have any other clubs benefited by this arrangement? Were there other double-headers, like away to Torquay & Exeter, or Hartlepool & Darlington, or Southend & Colchester, for other clubs?

The game itself finished level, Palace ended up in 8th and the Reds 8 points behind in 16th. Joe Harvey was the Workington manager, working here patiently till his beloved Newcastle would come calling. Glaziers' boss George Smith resigned as he said he would if he didn't get Palace promoted.

Carlisleprogs asked this above:-

Brighton & Hove Albion v Crystal Palace.

I wonder whether the current local derby status and rivalry existed 82 years ago?

The answer is yes (though the word "derby" is used more by the media than the fans). My mother used to go to Palace in the 1920's with her dad. Matches with Brighton were spicier then too, as for a game at Palace, Brighton would empty as the men would go to the game and their wives would go shopping or continue on to London. On the return match, Croydon would empty as the wives would go to the seaside while the men would go to the Goldstone. Checking the gates, the Palace v Brighton figures in the 20's are no higher than other games. And I'm not sure how violent it got, she didn't remember any real hostility, I know that really kicked off in 1974 and was exacerbated by the mutual loathing of Terry Venables and Alan Mullery, who gave a V-sign to Palace fans at an infamous cup game in 1976.

25/2/56 Division Two
Barnsley 2 Blackburn 1
Attendance 11,683
More cover space given to the battle of the two hotels than the actual match.

25/2/61 Scottish Cup 3rd Round
Alloa 2 Forfar 1
An all second division tie saw Alloa progress to the Quarter Finals where they would be beaten by eventual Cup winners Dunfermline, who were managed by Jock Stein who was on his way to his first trophy as a manager.

Monday 26th February 1968

FA Youth Cup, 5th round (Q/F)

Chelsea 3 Crystal Palace 5 (Vansittart 2, Lewis, Cook, Morton)

A very good win by a young Palace side which won through to a first-ever appearance in this competition's semi finals, where they were beaten over two legs by Coventry 1-3 on aggregate. Looking at the players listed, two of the Palace side had decent pro careers, Phil Hoadley (400+ league appearances) and Tommy Vansittart (99) though both had to leave Palace to become established. At Chelsea the only familiar name to me is Ian "Chico" Hamilton, who left the Bridge after only 5 games but had great success at Aston Villa.

Saturday 27th February 1960

Division IV

Barrow 0 Crystal Palace 1 (Roche)

Gate: 5,949

Worth reading "Clubman's" comments, specially if you're a Millwall fan.

Palace concluded their brief Cumberland tour with a tidy win at Holker Street, also part of a 10-game unbeaten run. Barrow finished a point and two places behind Workington in 18th. Still be interested to hear if other clubs managed to fix two away games back-to-back 48 hours apart to ease travel costs, and if this was an agreement reached when Div 4 was set up in 1958?

27/2/61 Friendly
Peterborough 5 Portsmouth 3
Not sure why these two had a mid season friendly a few weeks after meeting in the FA Cup, but a crowd of 5,600 saw a bit of a goal fest with Terry Bly (Posh) and Ron Saunders (Pompey) both scoring hat tricks.

Saturday 28th February 1959

Division IV

Gateshead 1 Crystal Palace 3 (Long, Deakin, Summersby)

Gate: 3,614

Palace were too erratic to go up, but proved too good for the Heed who had two inside forwards called Smith, labelled as Smith No 1 and Smith No 2. Both Smiths were called Ken, both were inside or centre forwards but how it helped by calling them 1 and 2 I really don't know. To try to help, here's the list of Gateshead goalscorers for the season - both Smiths had scored 4 goals to date:-

The confusion would only have arisen for a few months of 58/9 as one Ken went to Ashington at the end of 58/9 after 6 years at Redheugh, the other Ken joined in November 58 and left in December 59, so the overlap lasted from November 58 to the end of 58/9 only. Phew! (Both had also played previously for Blackpool, though one of them didn't make any first team starts!)
