20th February, 1932

Birmingham 1 Derby County 1 (Crooks)

att: 17,397

Quite the afternoon out - as well as the football, the band of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment would play a medley of 7 rip-roaring tunes before kick-off as well as the gentleman in charge of the PA system playing no fewer than 11 records at half-time.

Monday 21st February 1955

Floodlit Friendly

Crystal Palace 0 Plymouth Argyle 0

Gate: ?

Can't imagine anything much more tedious than this. A no doubt "Arctic" February night, a goalless draw, 2 struggling teams over 200 miles apart, Palace 20th in Div 3 S, Argyle 20th in Div 2. I guess a couple of thousand attended, there being little else to do back then. The 4pp programme has done well to survive. Manager Cyril Spiers was very enthusiastic about recent performances in his notes but Palace, who got a well-deserved point against high-flying Orient only 48 hours before this friendly, lost 5-0 at Reading on the following Saturday. Normal service was resumed!

Saturday 22nd February 1964

Division III

Millwall 0 Crystal Palace 1 (Burridge)

Gate: 20,264

A quick look at the league table - it didn't change much as Palace were promoted as runners-up to Coventry, while Millwall were relegated in 21st place with Crewe, Wrexham & Notts Co joining them.

The winning goal was scored by Peter Burridge, in his second season at Palace after joining from Millwall in the summer of 1962. He'd been top scorer there, hitting 58 goals in 87 games for the Lions. So when he dived to head home a late winner, you can imagine the Den crowd showering him with spittle and other objects. And according to Peter, you wouldn't have been disappointed. The photo shows him horizontal, between the legs of Palace #9 Cliff Holton. Other players visible are Alex Stepney in goal (literally!), Harry Cripps on his way down, and #2 John Gilchrist. The ball is at the foot of the far post, on its way over the line. Two precious points!

Saturday 23rd February 1946

Division III South - South Region Cup

Crystal Palace 2 (Smith, Kurz), Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic 1

Gate: c10,000 (according to programme's previous owner)

At the time of the game, these 2 sides were first & second, and Palace's win improved their position further. However, Boscombe won the return fixture 4-0 next week and won the division by a point from Bristol Rovers with Palace a point further back in 4th place. Bournemouth went on to beat North Region winners QPR in the semi final, and then Walsall in the final. And presumably, they retain the trophy today!

Saturday 24th February 1951

Division III South

Gillingham 0 Crystal Palace 0

Gate: 11,478

The first season back in the league for the Gills after demotion in 1938, and they struggled throughout but still finished above Palace whose top scorer with 5 in 6 games was player/boss Ronnie Rooke, who left the club in the November. The Glaziers picked up the wooden spoon (again) with just 27 points and a meagre 33 goals, less than half the Gills' total of 69 though they finished in 22nd place. A previous owner has kindly stuck a brief match report onto the middle pages, revealing that apparently there was so much "vigour" that a Palace player had his name taken. Heaven forbid!

24th February, 1962

Yorkshire League

Stocksbridge Works v Selby Town

6 page gatefold issue (unpriced).

I don't know the match result but the home club did go on to win the league that season with Selby finishing 9th (out of 16 clubs).

Stocksbridge merged with another local club in 1986 to become the Stocksbridge Park Steels of today.
