18 January 1947

New Brighton v Rochdale

Division 3 North

A simple 4 page programme with team line ups and a few adverts in the middle. A nice action photo on the back, reproduced from a local newspaper. The photo shows New Brighton’s keeper failing to stop Southport scoring a second goal in the previous match.

Rochdale won this match 2 - 1.

Flashhat - just want to say it’s good to see the items from matches you have attended on each day. I used to keep a note of matches I attended but stopped about 25 years ago. I wish I had kept it up.

Keep the items coming.

Saturday 19th January 1946

Division III South League Cup Qualifying Comp

Crystal Palace 6 (Kurz 2, Reece 2, G Lewis 2), Brighton & Hove Albion 1

Gate: unknown

Some very tempting attractions at the Croydon Empire - "The 5 Cranks" may well have been the Palace forward line in the post-war era.

Easy win for Palace in this fledgling competition in which Palace finished 4th after their 16 games - I'm not sure where Brighton ended up. Two of the Palace goals were scored by Tommy Reece, signed from Wolves just before the war. Usually a half-back, he moved up to inside forward for this cup competition and scored 8 goals in 14 games - whereas at half-back he scored rarely (5 goals in 81 games). He eventually moved back to the Midlands, joining Kidderminster Harriers in 1948 when nearly 30.

Spurs v Blackpool 19 Jan 1963. Two goals from Greaves gave Spurs a 2-0win. Last year sometime l purchased a large bundle of ephemera for £10 , it was all related to Football League referees. It took me hours to sort through them. The only programme in the box was this Spurs one. The referee for this game was Gilbert Pullin, who was also the ref for the Arsenal v Man Unt game 1Feb 1958 . This was United’s last game before the Munich tragedy. I kept all the items relating to Gilbert Pullin and put the rest in a local auction with some other bits and pieces .Back to the Spurs v Blackpool game. During the game , Spurs burly centre- forward , Bobby Smith, collided with Pullin on the frozen pitch and the ref was badly injured. All the details of the insurance claims and letters of support from other refs for Pullin were with the programme. As far as l know, Gilbert Pullin never took charge of a Football League match again. For anyone interested in the subject, take a look at the case that Man Unt brought against Gilbert Pullin when he was the ref for the Man Unt v West Brom game 15 Dec 1962. It looks like most football history books have got it wrong, when they claim that Pullin retired from the game after the FA decision against him.

19th January, 1957

Hull City 3 Clarke 2, Bulless)
Derby County 3 (Ryan, Straw, Brown)

att: 14,543

Gordon Brown, on his debut for Derby, scored within 90 seconds of the kickoff.

Smart cover from the Tigers - just a pity it doesn't include match details.

20/1/73 Divison Four
Cambridge 1 Exeter 3
Victory for the visitors on the day, but at the end of the season it was the hosts who were promoted while Exeter misssed out on joining them by six points.

20/1/82 Friendly
Torquay v Birmingham
Can't find match details for this one, which I assume was arranged to fill a gap in the fixture list due to being an FA Cup week?

20th January, 1951

Kent Senior Cup

Ashford v Whitstable Town

Interesting stat on the front cover about the average home gate 'dropping' to 1,990. Not bad at all for a Kent League club, I would have thought. Football was very affordable back then.

20th January, 1981

Liverpool res 3 Derby res 2

Lots of annotations but I don't really mind that as it lends provenance to the item. From memory, I think this one belonged to a local journalist who was covering the match.

22nd January, 1955

Derby remain into the relegation zone and would remain there for the rest of a fairly awful season for the club.

Northampton Town 1 (Brown) Nottm Forest 2 (Crowe, Wignall)

Saturday 23rd January 1965

Division II

Plymouth Argyle 1 Crystal Palace 1 (Smith)

Gate: 15,582

A first league meeting at this level for these 2 clubs ended all square with Keith Smith netting for the travellers.

6 of the listed players showed up at Portsmouth in the early 70's of which four were in the Argyle front line (No's 8-11) plus 5 & 11 of Palace. That's pretty unusual, I'd have thought.
