14/1/69 Division Four
Doncaster 0 Halifax 0
It would be easy to look at the result and assume this was a dull encounter, but this match was quite significant for both clubs as they were both at the start of long unbeaten runs.
For Donny, this was the second match in a run of nineteen unbeaten that would take them to win the Title.
For Halifax, it was the first in a run of seventeen unbeaten that would see them promoted in second place.

Saturday 15th January 1966

Division II

Rotherham United 3 (Chappell, Galley, Sewell og), Crystal Palace 0

Gate: 8,410

A comprehensive win for the Milllers who ended the season in a healthy 7th place with Palace 5 points and 4 places behind them. Steve Kember made his third 1st team start of the 286 he ended up with, aged just 17. At the other end of the spectrum, record signing Derek Kevan made the last appearance in his very short stay at the club (21 games, 5 goals).

15 January 1927

Tranmere Rovers v Durham City

Goals galore in this Division Three North fixture as Tranmere won 8 - 3.

15 January 1938

Sheffield United v Newcastle United

A 4 - 0 home win. The programme cover features an image of Ernest Needham. He played for the Blades between 1891 and 1910, making 464 appearances. Needham was capped 16 times for England. From 1901 to 1912 he also played first class cricket for Derbyshire.

Carlisleprogs,, that Tranmere v Durham is interesting. Ellis Rimmer on the left - wing for Tranmere before joining Sheffield Wednesday. This was a golden decade for outstanding forwards coming through the ranks at Rovers. Ellis Rimmer, Dixie Dean and then Pongo Waring all starting at Tranmere in the 1920s and then becoming England stars. This was during the football era when it was hard to get an international cap.

Some great players came through at Tranmere in that period and yet they were in division 3 North from entering the League until they were promoted in 1938. I like the 1920s Prentonian programmes, not sure why the players seem to be a climbing a ladder on the left front cover.

Wednesday 16th January 1946

FA Cup 3rd round, 2nd replay

Queens Park Rangers 1 Crystal Palace 0

Gate: unknown

With both clubs their respective divisional champions and 105 goals between them, you might have expected something other than two goalless matches (one after extra time) and the second replay being settled by a solitary strike - but that's what you got for your hard-earned.

Winners Rangers beat Saints in round 4 before succumbing to losing finalists Charlton in R5. Hosts Fulham had already lost to the Addicks in R3, and in their league season (results on the back page, left), they finished 8th in the National League South.

I'm trying to shake off the image of Doris & Mabel crossing off their Bingo cards whilst Dancing and Wrestling as advertised on the cover.

16/1/60 Division One
Wolves 4 Man City 2
At the end of the season, Wolves would miss out on the Title by one point to Burnley after losing their last match of the campaign at home to Spurs.

Tuesday 17th January 1978

Representative Match

Crystal Palace Under-19 XI 0, England Youth XI 0

Gate: unknown

One game too many for these budding stars as I don't remember a single thing about the game - though a few pints of Youngs may account for that. Also it's just as well I did those team changes. Billy Gilbert played the first half for Palace but switched at half time to replace the injured Brentford defender, Danis Salman, so it wasn't too serious a match. The Palace XI was more or less the one that won the Youth Cup in 1976/7, with only three of that team (Ken Sansom, Ian Walsh, and skipper Steve Brennan RIP) dropping out through age from the side which also won the Cup in 1977/8. The 76/7 Cup-winning side is below:-

Peter Nicholas came to Luton early - mid 80's, what a player he was, massively under rated for us in my opinion, left for European football in Scotland if I recall

Couple of Amateur Cup second round ties from this day in 1970.

Evenwood v Hendon

This match was abandoned (presumably due to weather conditions) with Hendon leading 2-1. When it was replayed it ended in a 1-1 draw, Hendon winning the replay 4-2. So a lot of travelling involved for both sides.

As an aside, I was surprised to see 3-digit telephone numbers being used as late as 1970 (as per the advert on the front cover).

City of Leeds & Carnegie College v Walton & Hersham

Large-sized programme which some idiot (i.e. me) had the bright idea of punching holes in to file it away. Guilty, yes, but I was young!

The visitors won this tie easily enough, 4-0, and were actually drawn to meet the winners of the Evenwood/Hendon replay.

As it turned out, Walton & Hersham beat Hendon after a replay before losing out to Dagenham (the eventual losing finalists) in the quarter-finals.

Saturday 18th January 1964

Division III

Shrewsbury Town 1 Crystal Palace 1 (Werge)

Gate: 4,303

Points shared at Gay Meadow, when the Shrews had at left back future Palace star Peter Wall who made 208 appearances over 8 injury-hit years at Selhurst. The point helped Palace take the runners-up spot while the Salopians ended in 11th. The Glaziers goal came from winger Eddie Werge, Sidcup born and signed from Charlton in 1961. Another injury-plagued player, he broke both legs in his time at the club, eventually playing 90 games with 7 goals before heading off to South Africa in 1965. Here's Eddie a bit later in 1964.

18 January 1934

Tranmere Rovers v Barrow

A flimsy 4 pager that is wider than an A4 sheet and difficult to find unfolded.

Tranmere won 4 - 1. Rovers finished the season in 7th place with Barrow in 8th.

Playing centre forward for Barrow was Jimmy Shankly, older brother of the more famous Bill. Jimmy was a very good player in his own right After a short period at Sheffield United, he scored prolifically for Southend and Barrow. He finished his career with a few appearances for Carlisle.

All 5 of the Shankly brothers played professional football - a talented family and, looking at where they were born, football meant they didn’t go down the pit.
