Saturday 10th January 1959
FA Cup 3rd round
Sheffield United 2 (Russell 2), Crystal Palace 0
Gate: 22,179
And so after the win over Shrewsbury at the Molineux replay, Palace ventured further north to make their first ever trip to Bramall Lane. But it wasn't to be and so ended another Cup run, but as I have said previously, a 3rd round exit to Palace can be considered something of a success in this decade. The Blades got as far as the quarter finals when they lost to giant-killing Norwich City in a replay. And they finished 3rd in Div 2 as rivals the Owls won that division - I bet that hurt! Palace were 7th in Div 4. |

10/1/48 FA Cup 3rd Round
Arsenal 0 Bradford Park Avenue 1
A Cup giant killing at Highbury as second division BPA defeated their hosts who were on their way to winning the League Title.
BPA's joy was short lived though as they were knocked out in the next round by non league Colchester.
10/1/53 FA Cup 3rd Round
Arsenal 4 Doncaster 0
Goals form Cliff Holton, Doug Lishman, Jimmy Logie and Don Roper see the Gunners comfortably through.
Their run would end in the Quarter Finals at the hands of Blackpool.
10/1/59 Division Three
Swindon 0 Bournemouth 1
10.778 in attendance to watch two sides that would end up in mid table this season.
10/1/66 East Anglian Cup 2nd Round
Stevenage Town v Wembley Town
A bit of a mystery regarding this one.
Records show that the original tie was played on 6/12/65 at Stevenage and was a 0-0 draw.
The replay was also played at Stevenage, but on 14/2/66 and won by the hosts 2-1.
I can only assume that the 10/1/66 shown on this programme was postponed for some reason and played four weeks later and the venue switched as well.

10 January 1951
Mansfield Town v Tranmere Rovers
Division 3 North
10 January 1948

Saturday 11th January 1947
FA Cup 3rd round
Newcastle United 6 (Shackleton 2, Bentley, Pearson, Stobbart, Wayman), Crystal Palace 2 (Naylor 2)
Gate: 43,183
A forward line containing prolific scorers like Roy Bentley, Charlie Wayman and the great Len Shackleton proved too much for Palace but they made a half-decent fist of it. For those of a statistical bent, this is one of SIX occasions Palace have played away to Newcastle in this round of the FA Cup. The narrative mentions the first two such occasions, including when then non-league Palace won 1-0 up there in 1907.
Below is a freebie inserted into a couple of earlier Palace home programmes, showing the travel arrangements for this game. The plan was to set off from Kings Cross at 11:30 on Friday night, arrive in Newcastle at 6:19 am then have 8 hours in town. After the game, take the 11:14pm train (another 7 hours in town) to arrive back at Kings X at 6:05 a.m. on Sunday - making it a 30.5 hour round trip - plus of course you have to travel to and from Kings X from your South London home. All for £2.50!
Scorer of both Palace goals was Billy Naylor, who played just 19 games after WW2, scoring 11 goals - having changed his name by deed poll from Billy Bark at some point in war-time. After leaving Palace a month after this match, he played a while at Brentford and then Leyton Orient.

A fourth defeat in a row for The Gunners.

Bolton 2 Leicester 3
A really important win for The Foxes who would only survive relegation bu a single point at the end of the season.

Saturday 12th January 1963
Division III
Brighton & Hove Albion 1 (Donnelly), Crystal Palace 2 (Holton, Burridge)
Gate: 12,333
Probably the only game played in the snowy South, indeed Palace didn't play again till 2nd Feb - but this win was crucial as the Glaziers started the game in 23rd place to Albion's 21st, and as the postponed games piled up, Palace really hit form to end the season in 12th while their poor old hosts finished in 22nd and were relegated.
In the photo new signing Cliff Holton, in unseen bright yellow gloves, goes up for a header as fellow scorer, Peter Burridge, in similar gloves, stands poised for action on the edge of the box. These 2 galvanised Palace into life and between them scored 63 goals in the next season and a half. They were my heroes!

Saturday 13th January 1940
Friendly Match (Reserves)
Crystal Palace 2 Shorts Sports 4 (presumably)
Gate: Unknown
Palace played Shorts Sports several times in this era, home and away, in friendlies, at either first team or reserve level. This game is a reserve XI as the first team were away at Southend on this day in the London South A League. I've guessed at the score due to the 2-4 appearing on the middle pages.
Shorts were a team from Rochester in Kent, I don't know much about them as an entity, if work-based or whatever. Maybe someone here does? Their line-up includes at #9 Jackie Palethorpe, the former Palace, Aston Villa, Sheffield Wednesday, Reading, Stoke City and Preston striker.
The programme itself landed at PPP Towers less than 24 hours ago! |

se20blue - many thanks for Shorts Sports info!
Saturday 14th January 1961
Division IV
Hartlepools Utd 2 Crystal Palace 4 (Heckman, Summersby, Byrne, Woan)
Gate: 4,430
A good win for Palace as these sides met for the last time (so far) in League action - Palace were promoted and Pools sought re-election, successfully, finishing in 23rd place but with 71 goals scored. Palace, and champs Peterborough, both hit over 100, and Byrne, Woan, Heckman and Summersby between them scored 82. |
