There are other examples of dual grounds. My old club had one (Wakefield RFC, but it's not that!) ; St Helens, Swansea is another that springs to mind.

OK two things here:

1. The name is Bramall Lane, .......not Bramhall Lane (we do get touchy about it).

I understood that it was BDTBL!

Sharrowblade, thanks for the reply. As someone mentioned, could well be The County Ground, Northampton? Only Sheffield United, Bradford P A and Northampton Town appear to have had these dual grounds. Don’t think a non- league team would have had such a vast arena. As Pete mentioned, could be another sport such as athletics or rugby. I will probably never know!

I'm not so sure that you'll never know.

For a picture of that era, it looks quite a grand ground, and although I can't see it clearly, do I detect some kind of corner flag, which suggests maybe football or rugby.

It’s not a very clear photo but here’s a few attempted close ups. Looks like the group of blokes are about to enjoy a beer! Is it a Summer event? Don’t think they took beer into the football, but could be wrong. Cricket?

The way people are sat down on the ground looks like cricket. There's no quadrant painted near the flag so probably not a corner post. Though not sure why flagposts would be there for a cricket match, unless it was supporting a boundary rope.

Those 3 stands on one side, with the middle one more like a pavilion, are so distinctive, I'm surprised they haven't been recognised.

I was wondering if the flagposts represented the try line and deadball line of a rugby pitch?

I've shared it on a Rugby grounds forum.

See if that gets any results?

First guess.

"I've a feeling its Trent Bridge for a Notts County game. The houses on the photo look very much like the ones on Hound Rd that are still there today."

Thanks Pete and Tackler, l thinks it’s an interesting photo because the crowd are not posing for the camera. I hope that ‘ Peaky Blinders’ gang got that ale down them before the policeman spotted them! Charlie Chaplin looks like he’s having a nap against the fence! Just noticed straw hats/ boaters on some of the spectators to the left. Can’t be football can it , unless it’s that Crystal Palace away firm from the pre- First World War era Laughing

I can pick out Charlie Chaplin leaning against the fence, but does anyone know the venue? Thanks for any help.

In comparison with the initial image, could it be Trent Bridge as Tackler suggests? The image below is taken from a different angle but the stands and the housing behind are very similar, especially the first house.

Thanks everyone., does look like Trent Bridge. Great knowledge by Tackler. I had no idea Notts County and also Nottingham Forest both had spells playing at Trent Bridge pre- 1910. This does look like cricket. First Test at this venue was 1899 England v Australia. Looking at the fashions , could well be from that Test? Looks like a big attendance in this photo , so don’t think it’s a County game.

I can't take any credit but glad the mystery is solved.

Great article Notice the horse and carriages at the back with people standing on them to get a view of the match!

I knew I had a photo of Bramall Lane with a game going on - this is 1911/12 v Blackburn with the cricket pavilion in the background. The photo was sold a few years ago to a member of this board.

Thanks Pete, those old images are great. Still think it’s Charlie Chaplin in the original pic!
