Carlisleprogs, if you go on The Liverpool Echo site, there’s an interesting article about Jarrad Branthwaite and how Everton signed him. Apparently he was a very quite kid and Carlisle were on the verge of letting him go when he was 14. He’s now looking very much like a future star.. |

Thanks for that. I think Carlisle were going to release him as he was too small. Luckily, they kept him and, after a growth spurt, he is about 6 foot 4.
He only played a few times for Carlisle but it was like watching a Rolls Royce in a banger race. I wish him every success as he always seemed a decent, level-headed, lad. The money from his sale has helped Carlisle massively. We have a lad now called Josh Dixon who I think will be as good if not better. He has had a couple of unlucky injuries but has been on the bench a few times this season.
All lower league clubs need these young stars to come through. Hopefully Jarrad, Josh and others from Carlisle will become household names in the Premier League and keep little old Carlisle United afloat. |

6/1/79 Irish League
Ards FC V Coleraine
No idea of the score, but Ards had the better season finishing in 3rd place while Coleraine ended up in 8th position.
6/1/79 FA Cup 3rd Round
Swansea 0 Bristol Rovers 1
Although the Swans would gain promotion from Division Three this season, they were knocked out by their Division Two visitors.
Rovers would leave the competition in Round 5 at the hands of a 6-1 drubbing from Ipswich.
6/1/81 FA Cup 3rd Round Replay
Enfield 3 Port Vale 0
Non league Enfield took the scalp of their second opponents from Division Four after previously beating Hereford.
Their run would end in the next round at the hands of Third Division Barnsley in a Replay at White Hart Lane after they switched the venue to attract more fans through the gate which I always felt was a mistake.
I attended the Hereford and Port Vale ties at Southbury Road and felt that the strange surroundings would impact on Barnsley as well. Instead, Enfield froze at The Lane and were beaten 3-0 which I also attended.
One good thing on a personal level from that cup run was that I had the rare opportunity to watch some matches live with my mates. As travelling Spurs, Arsenal and West Ham fans, we rarely got the chance to do that together.

Saturday 6th January 1962
FA Cup 3rd round
Aston Villa 4 Crystal Palace 3 (Byrne 2, Uphill)
Gate: 39,011
A very close call at Villa Park with only a late goal by Harry Burrows, whose cross was misjudged in the wind by Palace keeper Vic Rouse, preventing 3rd Div Palace taking 1st Div Villa to a replay. And a game in which Johnny Byrne persuaded West Ham to splash out £63000 on him a few weeks later. |

Saturday 7th January 1950
Division III South
Brighton & Hove Albion 0 Crystal Palace 0
Gate: 13,289
Palace's only Div III S post-war single-digit finish (7th) under player-boss Ronnie Rooke promised much but didn't last - another false dawn. But a good point at the Goldstone against a side who finished level on points but with inferior goal average. A month later, Palace won the return 6-0 in which Rooke hit a treble. |

7/1/89 FA Cup 3rd Round
Bradford 1 Tottenham 0
Nothing special about the programme itself, but one of those awful away days I endured in the Cup following Spurs.
Spurs were expected to beat their opponents from the Second Division, but instead failed to turn up on the day and became a giantkilling victim.
Bradford were knocked out in the next round at the hands of Hull.

7th January, 1956
Both Brighton and Derby had been eliminated from the FA Cup prior to Round 3 so decided it might be an opportune moment to get together for a friendly match.
Brighton 3 (Langley, Stephens, Hailley)
Derby 4 (Parry 2, Pye, Powell)
att: 4,414
5 years later, however, the two met in the 3rd Round of the Cup.
Brighton 3 Derby 1 (Thompson)
att: 18,403

Saturday 8th January 1972
Division I
Nottingham Forest 0 Crystal Palace 1 (Wallace)
Gate: 19,033
Scorer of this vital goal was Willie Wallace, signed from Celtic with John Hughes, but returned to Scotland within a year after hitting just 4 league goals in 39 appearances. However, his 3 goals this season led to the Glaziers winning 5 points - more than enough to leave us in 20th place while Forest & Huddersfield both went down on 25 points.

Saturday 9th January 1960 - 60 years ago today
FA Cup 3rd round
Scunthorpe United 1 Crystal Palace 0
Gate: 12,561
Club notes reveal Palace's lot as a potential "giant-killer", nothing much has changed, particularly the result last night, but there's a legendary figure mentioned lower down the column which is worth a look.
Scunthorpe finished the season in 15th place in Div 2 while Palace were 8th in Div 4. And Scunny lost at home, to 3rd Div Port Vale in round 4. |

9/1/60 Division Fpur
Millwall 1 Walsall 1
Walsall would go on to be Champions at the end of the season while The Lions missed out on Promotion by just one place and four points ending in fifth place.
9/1/60 FA Cup 3rd Round
Man City 1 Southampton 5
A huge upset as top flight City were thumped on their own patch by their Third Division opponents.
Saints striker, Derek Reeves, did a lot of the damage scoring four goals in what was regarded as Southampton's finest hour..........until 1976!!
In the next round however, the roles were reversed and Saints were beaten by Watford from Division Four!

A bit of variety today:
9 January 1926
FA Cup 3rd round
Corinthian FC v Manchester City (at Crystal Palace)
A 3 - 3 draw with City winning the replay 4 days later by 4 goals to nil. City were beaten 1 - 0 in the final by Bolton Wanderers
9 January 1937
Watford v Aldershot
Division 3 South
Fulham Reserves v Brighton Reserves
London Combination
Monday 9 January 1939
Halifax Town v Darlington
Not sure why this was played on a Monday. It was a 1 - 1 draw
9 January 1932
Queens Park Rangers v Leeds United
FA Cup 3rd round
Rangers won 3 - 1
