Saturday 20th December 1958
Division IV
Crewe Alexandra 4 Crystal Palace 1 (Summersby)
Gate: 4,586
And so 5 days after beating Shrewbury 4-1 at Molineux, Palace headed North again for a league game at Gresty Road and fell to a heavy defeat by the same score. Palace's away form cost them dear as they finished 7th, 6 points from promotion, while Alex, who had lost recently 5-0 at South Shields in a cup replay, rallied to end up in 18th place, four points from re-election. New signing from Millwall, Roy Summersby, was settling in and hit his second goal for the club. |

6/12/58 Southern League South East Division
Yiewsley 1 Guildford City 0
The only ever season for this Division as part of the restructuring of the Southern League where extra teams were added and made North/South Divisions.
It didn't end well for either club with both relegated at the end of the season with Yiewsley in bottom place.

Monday 21st December 1953
FA Cup 2nd round, 2nd replay (at Selhurst Park)
Brighton & Hove Albion 1 Wrexham 3
Gate: unknown
Think about this fixture - a Cup 2nd replay, played 46 miles from one club, and 211 miles from the other, on a Monday afternoon, 4 days before Christmas. I've often wondered how many Wrexham fans attended this game, for which, as you can see from the Club comments, the venue was decided on a toin coss after the 1st replay at Brighton was drawn 1-1 (as was the first game at the Racecourse). Extraordinary really - you'd have thought that a toin coss would have given a directive that the ground must be roughly equidistant, but obviously not.
Wrexham's fans must have wished they had made the journey, winning this arduous match 3-1 - they finished 8th in Div 3 North with 51 points while Brighton were runners-up in 3 South with 61.
Does anyone know what the attendance was, please? The game is listed in "Other Matches at Selhurst" in the Breedons, but the gate wasn't shown. |

SATURDAY 21st DECEMBER 1957
Charlton Athletic entertain Huddersfield Town at The Valley in one of the most bizarre professional football games ever played:
Charlton Athletic F.C. 7–6 Huddersfield Town A.F.C. was an association football match between Football League Second Division teams Charlton Athletic and Huddersfield Town that took place on 21 December 1957 at Charlton Athletic's home ground, The Valley. Charlton played most of the match with 10 men after their captain Derek Ufton was injured, and Huddersfield were leading 5–1 with just 27 minutes remaining. At that point, Johnny Summers began an extraordinary passage of play in which he scored four goals (he had already scored one early in the second half) and assisted with two others to allow Charlton to win 7–6. Huddersfield become the first, and still the only, team to score six goals in a professional football match in England and still be on the losing side. A reporter at the time described the match as "amazing, incredible, fantastic".

I've had a look on the British Newspaper Archive, and the match report in the Bradford Observer gives the attendance as 4,766 at the bottom of the report |

Saturday 22nd December 1956
Division III South
Coventry City P Crystal Palace P
Match postponed, weather related no doubt as opposed to the current favourite, global pandemic. At the time Palace were in 15th place with 21 points, while the Bantams (as they were) were 21st with 19. The game was finally played, and a new programme was issued, on 1st April 1957, and it was a 3-3 draw. At season's end, City were 16th and the Glaziers 20th. |

Saturday 23rd December 1961
Division III
Swindon Town 5 Crystal Palace 0 Punched holes 2
Gate: 7,707
A veritable pre-Xmas roasting for Palace at the County Ground against a young Swindon side which was on its way up & out of Div 3, not this season but in 62/3 when they finished runners-up to the Cobblers. This season they were 9th to Palace's 15th, both sides lacking consistency but who scored 161 goals between them (78-83). |

Saturday 24th December 1949
Division III South
Ipswich Town 4 Crystal Palace 4 (Watson, Rooke 2, Howells)
Gate: 9,460
A Christmas cracker at Portman Road with player-manager Ronnie Rooke grabbing a brace on his way to 21 goals for the season and a 7th place finish - it all looked so promising then but within a year Rooke was gone and the club didn't finish so high again until 1959. Ipswich were settling into League football after joining in 1938 but their final 17th place was their lowest to date in their brief Div 3 S career. |
