Hull City 1 (Ackerman) Derby County 1 (Pye)
att: 16,472
Another great front cover from the Boothferry Park club.
Blackburn Rovers 6 (England, Harrison pen, Jones 3, Ferguson)
Northampton Town 1 (Lines)
att: 10,685
Blackburn had scored 9 goals in their previous 2 home games and were 5-1 up at half-time here.
No match details on the front cover. I wish clubs wouldn't do that.

Saturday 12th December 1964
Division II
Derby County 3 Crystal Palace 3 (Burridge 2, Smith)
Gate: 11,828
2 teams locked together in mid-table shared 6 goals and incredibly this was the fifth game in a row that Derby had drawn either 2-2 or 3-3. Palace finished their first season back in Div 2 since 1925 in 7th place, while County were 9th, 2 pts behind. Two of Palace's goals were scored by my first hero, Peter Burridge, so I'm very happy to share this image of him showboating.

Scottish Cup - Civil Service Strollers 3 Cowdenbeath 3
'Beath won the replay 6-1
Must admit to not knowing anything about this club:

Saturday 13th December 1947
FA Cup 2nd round
Bristol City 0 Crystal Palace 1 (a.e.t.) (Robson)
Gate: 22,327
A good win for Palace who were rewarded with a home 3rd round tie against Div 3 North Chester - which they lost.
I learnt some interesting information thanks to reading this programme. Firstly, this tie went to extra time, so there was no replay. Secondly, this was the third Saturday in a row that Bristol City had played FA Cup matches. Two weeks earlier, they drew 0-0 at Dartford in Round 1, and the following Saturday they played the replay which they won 9-2. So a league game was postponed to make way for the replay which wasn't played mid-week - so as not to interfere with men's working weeks as labour was in such short supply after WW2. Does anyone know how long that policy lasted? Growing up with floodlights and frequent evening kick-offs, this sort of detail had just passed me by, until now. |

13/12/58 Division Four
Exeter 3 Southport 2
Although this looks like it was a close game on the day, that was where the closeness between the two clubs ended that season.
Exeter finished in fifth place and missed out on promotion by just one point, while Southport had to seek relection after finishing botton and fourteen points from safety.

13 December 1947
FA Cup 2nd round
Workington v Crewe
A 2 - 1 win for Crewe
At the same time in the League
Carlisle v Accrington Stanley
Having won at Accrington a week earlier Carlisle must have been confident going in to this home fixture. The confidence was misplaced and Accrington won 3 - 2

Saturday 14th December 1957
Division III South
Exeter City 0 Crystal Palace 1 (Harrison)
Gate: 5,493
A useful win for Palace as they made their spirited attempt to finish just below the half-way cut-off point for entry to the new 4th Division. Exeter ended up last, level on points with Millwall. |

Monday 15th December 1958
FA Cup 2nd round, 2nd replay (at Molineux)
Shrewsbury Town 1 Crystal Palace 4 (Byrne, Deakin 2, Collins)
Gate: 8,062
After two 2-2 draws, the two Div 4 sides descended on Molineux and Palace recorded probably their best Cup victory since WW2, though there aren't too many contenders. Mike Deakin, Birmingham born and signed from Bromsgrove Rovers in 1954, enjoyed his near home-coming. Sheffield United awaited the Londoners in the next round. |

Saturday 16th December 1972
Division I
Crystal Palace 5 (Mulligan 2, Rogers 2, Whittle), Manchester United 0
Gate: 39,484
Paddy Mulligan slots home the opening goal and Don Rogers, who split the defence with a low pass, is seen in the background while Tony Dunne arrives too late. Despite this famous victory, Palace were relegated as they lost 9 of their last 14 matches including at Norwich in game 41, where if the result was reversed Palace would have stayed up. United were also on the slippery slope, finishing 18th and were to be demoted in the following season. For any Palace fan who was there on this day, (and there were about 100,000 who say they were!) it was a never-to-be-forgotten experience, and thank Goodness, it's all over YouTube. |

16th December, 1950
The third (and thankfully last) season that Derby programmes bore no match details on the cover.
Derby County 6 Sunderland 5
att: 15,952 - Far and away the lowest gate of the season to date (due to Xmas shopping and the fact it was freezing cold) missed a real cracker on an ice-bound pitch.
1-0 (Lee)
2-0 (McLaren)
2-1 (Davis)
3-1 (Lee)
3-2 (Ford)
----half time breather---
3-3 (Davis)
----snowstorm----
4-3 (Lee)
5-3 (McLaren)
5-4 (T.Wright)
6-4 (Lee)
6-5 (Ford)
Though Johnny Morris didn't get on the scoresheet, he had 4 "assists" (to use 2020 parlance).
Pity those regulars who had been forced into Xmas shopping that day rather than head to the match!
The subsequent home game had more than 32,000 in the Baseball Ground so perhaps they realised the error of their ways.....

Saturday 17th December 1960
Division IV
Accrington Stanley 2 Crystal Palace 3 (Byrne, Summersby, Heckman)
Gate: 3,385
The only visit of Palace to Peel Park ended in a 3-2 away win and Palace completed the double over their hosts who improved on their season opening day debacle in which they lost 9-2 at Selhurst. Palace were promoted as runners-up while Stanley finished 18th.
Looking at the middle pages, very tempted by the Cemetery Hotel, I envisage Bill Pinder aka Norman Bates pulling a pint of Lion Ale.
The referee was Kevin Howley, who took that year's FA Cup Final at the tender age of 35, then the youngest ever to do so, and was on the FIFA list from 1958 - a great achievement for one so young. Nowadays, FIFA referees don't get to do Level 4 matches at any time, let alone a week before Christmas. I reckon they would learn so much from fixtures like these. |

18/12/90 White Hart Lane Attendance 12,181
Peter Shilton's International Farewell Match
England XI v Franz Beckenbauer's Italia '90 XI
Goals from Gary Lineker,Matt Le Tissier, Paul Gascoigne and Kevin Keegan gave England a 4-0 win against a star studded line up that included Platini, Hagi, Valderrama & Roger Milla.
With the match being played at The Lane, there were a few additions from the Spurs squad involved too and Ossie Ardiles, Gudni Bergsson, Nayim, Paul Allen and Paul Walsh all came on as subs throughout the evening which "blurred" the lines of the teams a little.

Saturday 18th December 1954
Division III South
Crystal Palace 1 (Devonshire), Exeter City 1
Gate: 7,010
A 1-1 draw between two sides who started the game in 22nd and 21st places, and who ended in 21st (Palace) and 23rd (Grecians). So not among the division's best. And the low gate, a week before Christmas, was symptomatic of the malaise at Selhurst in this post-war era.
It's a rubbishy old programme in more ways than one, but I do like these snippets and wonder who came up with the opinions. You might like to read them for an insight into a 50's football brain, and consider how often you may have heard similar comments in the last few years.

18th December, 1973
FA Cup second round replay
Rochdale 3 Grantham 5
Kick-off at 1.45pm on a Tuesday due to the power restrictions of the time.
18th December, 1965
Programme for the ultimately postponed match between Northampton and Leeds.
Autographed by a few of the Leeds players but I've no idea whether they're genuine signatures or not.

Saturday 19th December 1942 - 78 years ago today
Football League South
Queens Park Rangers 3 Crystal Palace 0
Gate: 3,900
A bloke called Bastin at No 10 for Palace, but not the Arsenal legend Cliff on loan - this was FW Bastin, who played 5 games in that truncated 28-match league season. Rangers did well and finished in 3rd place while Palace slid down to end up in 15th of 18. A Cup competition started when the league games stopped at the end of February. |
