Saturday 1st December 1956
Division III South
Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic 2 Crystal Palace 2 (Berry, Hughes og)
Gate: 9,584
Boscombe had a strong season, finishing 5th, while Palace improved from their customary re-election-seeking position to end comfortably 5th from bottom. One of the away goals was scored by Peter Berry, a versatile forward who by 7 years was the younger brother of Manchester United's Johnny, who was badly injured in the Munich air crash. Peter played 161 games in all for Palace, scoring 28 times, before heading off to upwardly-mobile Ipswich in Summer 1958. Here he is:-

1/12/62 Division One
Man City 2 Arsenal 4
Defeat for the home side at the start of a winter that would be ravaged by the weather and see them relegated at the end of the season.

December 1st, 1951
Newcastle 2 Derby 1 (McLaren)
att: 49,926
December 1st, 1973
The famous "Smash & Grab" game (which the TV cameras were at and is on You Tube) where Alan Warboys and Bruce Bannister combined to clobber Brian Clough's Brighton 8-2.
It was just a few days after Brighton had lost 0-4 at home to Walton & Hersham in the FA Cup, too.

Saturday 2nd December 1961
Division III
Port Vale 0 Crystal Palace 1 (Smillie)
Gate: 9,761
Good win for Palace with John Cartwright, future coach to many, standing in for the stricken Johnny Byrne, who was only 3 weeks away from his full England debut. Palace were in the top half at this stage of 61/2 but slid away badly to finish 15th, while Vale ended 3 points and 3 places higher in 12th. A lovely prog cover, and nice to see comedian Arthur Askey branching out into fish sales, before your very eyes.
For the completists among us, a postponed game - no idea how many of these programmes there are around.
Saturday 2nd December 1972
Division I
Crystal Palace P Sheffield United P
Cover shows action from the game between these 2 sides a year earlier, when John "Yogi Bear" Hughes ran amok as Palace won 5-1. The postponed game was rearranged for 13th March and the Blades hit a nail into Palace's relegation coffin, winning 1-0. |

Tuesday 3rd December 1957
Floodlit Friendly
Birmingham City v Sampdoria
Benvenuto Sampa to Birmingham in December! At least the Austrian star Ernst Ocwirk and Charlton's own Eddie Firmani would be used to a cold winter. Though it looks like Firmani didn't play according to the original owner's team changes. He also suggested City might have won 2-0 (Hooper & Murphy scoring) but I can't be sure that was the final result. Maybe someone can enlighten me, please. The Genova side were managed by Mr Bill Dodgin, the ex Brentford, Fulham & Southampton man. |

3/12/94 FA Cup 2nd Round
Altrincham 1 Wigan 0
The Conference side knock out their Third Division opponents in one of their many cup upsets over the years.
Their reward was a trip to White Hart Lane in the next round where Tottenham beat them 3-0.
3/12/49 Division One
Arsenal 1 Wolves 1
Wolves would go on to miss out on the Title by Goal Average to Portsmouth at the end of the season.

4 December 1948
Third Division North
Carlisle United v Rotherham United
Standard home programme from that season. Sadly, for Carlisle, not a standard result as Rotherham won 8 - 1.
Rotherham went on to finish the season in second place behind Hull. Carlisle ended the season in 15th. Only one team went up and later in the season when Hull entertained Rotherham the attendance was over 49,000.

Saturday 4th December 1948
Division III South
Leyton Orient 1 (Neary) Crystal Palace 1 (Kurz)
Gate: 12,336
Very smart cover, but why would anyone write that info on it when it's clearly shown anyway? Each to their own, I suppose.
A good point for rock-bottom Palace, Fred Kurz again to the rescue, but not enough to save his club from 22nd and last spot, with only 5 points won away from home all season. The O's ended in 19th so didn't do an awful lot better, just 7 points above their visitors. A season best forgotten. But in case you were wondering, the O's players were NOT for sale! |

4th December 1943
Villa 0 Derby 1 (Tommy Powell)
att: 10,000
Not sure who that was in the #7 shirt for Derby - bit of a typo there.
4th December 1948
Everton reserves v Derby reserves
My records have it as a 2-1 win for the home side with Colin Bell scoring for Derby but the original programme owner disagrees. Who am I to argue with him (or her)?

The Everton programmes from beyond this match agree with you and have it down as a 2-1 home win in the results section on the back page. |

Saturday 5th December 1959
FA Cup 2nd round proper
Margate 0 Crystal Palace 0
Gate: 8,203
So a goalless draw at Hartsdown Park enabled Palace to take the Southern Leaguers back to Selhurst where the Div 4 side won 3-0. The Margate Supporters' Club asks for patience from their visitors as their resources will be stretched with their regular home attendance likely to be greatly exceeded, and it was - from the usual 2,500 to the 8,200 on this day. I wonder how bad it was - probably not as bad as it is (or was pre-Covid!) at Selhurst Park where if you want a drink at half-time, you have to miss the end of the first half or start of the second. The choice is yours.
Grubby programme but not a concern to me. Maybe the stain was picked up at the tea hut. |

Victory for the hosts who would get as far as the Quarter Finals before being knocked out by Doncaster.

Bradford City v Carlisle United
Great effort from City to produce a very good programme for this behind closed doors match. I was pleased to receive it this morning. The programme is based on the City programme from the 1977/8 season.
Today was the first time Carlisle have won away at Bradford City since 1951.

Saturday 6th December 1952
FA Cup 2nd round
Finchley A v Crystal Palace A
(Score 3-1 when abandoned at 63 mins - Burgess with the expunged Palace goal)
Gate: 7,144
The programme cover shows the evidence as it was re-used for the replayed game on the following Wednesday 10th Dec. Fog was the reason and it was so bad two Palace players in one car got lost and missed the kick-off so first reserve Wally Hanlon played and travelling stiff Bob Bishop was called in for his only 1st team appearance, which was sadly (for him) erased. You can see how good Athenian League Finchley were that year, only one defeat in all competitions and that to Chelsea in the LCC, and with future England player George Robb on the left wing. Certainly good enough for this feeble Palace side. The photo below shows how dense the fog was with the referee a ghostly presence but only about 10 yards from the action. Barham is the home keeper and I've never confidently identified the Palace player though it could be Johnny Rainford.
And now for a game that really did happen on this day:-
Monday 6th December 1954
Floodlit Friendly
Crystal Palace 5 (Deakin 2, Taylor, Tilston, Choules), Esbjerg 2
The Taylor scoring here was local boy Bob T, signed from Fulham but played only 2 league games before heading off to Gillingham and then Millwall. |
