West Ham 2 Derby 3 (Stamps, Doherty, Duncan)

att: 28,500

(Not in great nick but better than the other copy of this one I've got)

Johnny Ingham Testimonial.

A real servant to the club, he'd been at Gateshead since 1947, was their leading scorer of all time (109 goals in 430 games...as a winger) and still turning out for them as a non-lge club at the age of 40 four years after the Football League had done the dirty on the club.

Hope he got a good turnout on the day as he deserved it.

Wednesday 25th November 1953 - 67 years ago today

International Humbling

England 3 (Sewell, Mortensen, Ramsey pen), Hungary 6 (Hidegkuti 3, Puskas 2, Bozsik)

Gate: 105,000

England's rigid WM formation was pulled apart by Hungary's skill and movement, they had played together as a unit since 1950, winning the 1952 Olympic gold medal, and here they had 35 attempts on goal to England's 5 so the scoreline probably flattered the hosts. One change to the home line-up not noted on the prog - on the left wing Tom Finney was injured, so into the side for his international debut was 27 year old school-teacher George Robb, of Finchley and Spurs. In fact, less than a year before, he was part of a Finchley side that knocked Crystal Palace out of the FA Cup, and here he was picked at the last minute to play in this game. If anyone hasn't seen the various You Tube clips on this game, please do so. It debunks the myth that England used to be good at football. And 6 of this side never played for England again.

This photo was used in the programme - the Magnificent Magyars, in Helsinki after winning the Olympics. The Galloping Major, Ferenc Puskas, is second right, and deep-lying centre forward Nandor Hidegkuti, whom Harry Johnston is still trying to mark, is third right.

And if you thought it couldn't get any worse, 6 months later England travelled to Budapest for the return match and lost 7-1.

25/11/70 Friendly
Man City 2 Australian National XI 0
7,500 turned up at Maine Road to see the touring Aussie side defeated.
The fixture was arranged in reciprocation after City had toured Australia in May of the same year, where they had won six and drawn one of their seven matches.

25/11/61 Friendly
Swindon 4 Exeter 0
2,812 in attendance for this one where Ernie Hunt and Jack Smith bagged a brace each.
Ernie, of course, would go on to score that "donkey kick" goal for Coventry a few years later.

Wednesday 26th November 1952

FA Cup 1st round replay

Reading 1 Crystal Palace 3 (Fell 2, Rainford)

Gate: 8,167

I thought Palace's first cup win since 1947 was worth a mention, a bit of a surprise given Reading's superiority a couple of months earlier in Div III South. But the inclusion of new signings Colin Grimshaw, Bob Thomas & Les Fell had galvanised Palace and in this game, Fell, a winger from Charlton, grabbed a brace. You'll have to wait till December 10th to see that this didn't last long! Here's Les, aged 31:-

26/11/58 Friendly
Arsenal 3 Juventus 1
A crowd of 51,000 turned up at Highbury to see the Italian visitors beaten with goals from John Barnwell, Jimmy Bloomfield and Roy Goulding doing the damage, while John Charles responded for Juve.

26/11/77 FA Cup 1st Round
Bath City 0 Plymouth 0
Sadly for the non league side, their Cup run was to end with a 2-0 defeat in the replay at Home Park.
Plymouth would get knocked out in Round 3 by Mansfield.

26/11/74
Bill Glazier Testimonial
Coventry 6 England 1966 XI 6
Attendance - 15,205
It would appear that this was one of those "have a bit of fun" Testimonial matches as goalkeeper Glazier scored two of the Coventry goals on the night.
The England side contained nine of the World Cup winning side with only Bobby Charlton and Nobby Stiles missing.
Glazier was being rewarded for his time at Highfield Road where he made 346 appearances for the Sky Blues.
He also played 106 times for Crystal Palace and 9 times for Brentford in a career that ran from 1961 to 1977.

I believe the away side were based in Houghton le Spring near Sunderland. This was Houghton’s last season in the North Eastern League. They finished bottom and at the end of the season moved to the Wearside League.

26 November 1932

FA Cup 1st round

Carlisle United v Denaby United

Denaby is a mining village within the Doncaster Metropolitan area. At the time the club were playing in the Midland League. Carlisle won the tie by one goal to nil.

26 November 1938

This match ended in a 1 - 1 draw and the teams met in a replay 4 days later.

26 Nov 1966

Portsmouth 0 Derby 3 (Hector, Durban, Buxton)

att: 13,868

The pedant in me appreciates the "Programme and Journal" in the title as there's a subtle difference between the two.

26 Nov 1989

Orb Works v Newport AFC

One from The Exiles' first season following reformation.

This day - sometime in the 80s. I know not which year.

Polkemmet Juniors v Cambuslang Rangers

From the happy days before MS Word/Publisher when programme compilers, often no more than teenagers, cobbled something together. as best they could. Often more readable than modern "professional" efforts.

Saturday 27th November 1965

Division III

Hull City 1 Grimsby Town 1

Gate: 20,681

A Humberside derby with spoils shared. Dug this one out in the absence of anything noteworthy in my CPFC files, and has as a bonus a very interesting page of stats. Up front for the Tigers was a lovely little player, Ken "Pud" Wagstaff, scorer of 173 league goals for Hull and before that, 93 for Mansfield, at very nearly 1 every 2 games. A goal machine - Mick Quinn used to remind me of him 20-odd years later. Here's Ken in 1966.

New Brighton v Carlisle United

A 1 - 0 home win.

On the same day

Carlisle United Res v Murton Colliery Welfare

North Eastern League

27 November 1963

To mark the opening of new floodlights Carlisle hosted Morton. Described inside as “ an international friendly” this was the first leg of a double header as Carlisle travelled up to Greenock two weeks later to play the second leg.

27th Nov 1972

Ian Buxton testimonial, Luton v Derby

Buxton played almost 200 games for the two clubs before retiring in 1969 to concentrate on his cricket career. He played for Derbyshire between 1959 and 1973, captaining the county in the latter years.

27th Nov 1988

Gauldry v Strathkinness

Excellent issue from a club playing Sunday morning amateur football from a village with a population of only about 800.

Saturday 28th November 1953

Division III South

Southend United 1 Crystal Palace 2 (Thomas, Randall)

Gate: 7,748

A great double page Club Notes column including comments from a coach-load of Southend players after they'd watched England's debacle against Hungary 3 days earlier. "Get stuck in" was one idea of stopping the Magyars. 67 years later, if we were actually allowed into football grounds, I bet we'd all hear TBBM saying that today.

Palace were in the top half after this win but declined badly thereafter, winning only 5 more games in that season and finishing 22nd/24, 3 points and 6 places below the Shrimpers. Bob Thomas scored consistently through the season, ending with 20, and in his time at Palace scored 31 in 96 games and before that hit 55 goals in 167 games for Fulham, and 17 in 41 for Plymouth. Here he is in 1954, a year before dipping into non-league at Kettering. A good-looking fellow who was another to lose a large chunk of his career to WW2.

Saturday 29th November 1958

Division IV

Shrewsbury Town (Russell, Skeech), Crystal Palace 1 (Byrne)

Gate: 4,135

Inaugural season 4th division match ending in a narrow win for the Shrews who were promoted in 4th place while Palace ended 6 points behind in 7th. Mention is made on the front cover of the 2 sides being drawn together in the forthcoming FA Cup 2nd round - that ended in a 2nd replay and I'll share that one with you as & when it happens. Very high-scoring in Div IV, champions Port Vale and the Shrews both exceeded 100, Walsall hit 95 and Palace 90, Barrow let in 104, Aldershot 97 and the meanest defence was Coventry with 47. And keeper Raymond Victor Rouse became the first 4th Div player to win a full cap - for Wales, v Northern Ireland.

29 November 1947

FA Cup 1st round proper:

Stockport County v Accrington Stanley

County won this by 3 goals to 1

New Brighton v Marine

This one can be called a local derby as they were based about 12 miles apart. New Brighton won this match 4 - 0.

Barrow v Carlisle United

Very much not a local derby as this was an 80 plus mile trek for Carlisle. Even nowadays it is about 1 hour 45 minutes by road (and longer in the tourist season)

Barrow won through by 3 goals to 2.

On the same day Carlisle Reserves played Murton Colliery in the North Eastern League.

29 November 1952

Aberdeen v Scottish Command Army X1

29th Nov 1947

Derby 1 Arsenal 0 (Reg Harrison)

att: 35,605

Arsenal's unbeaten start to the season comes to an end at the Baseball Ground.

29th November 1970

One of a number of testimonial matches for long-serving Derby forward Jack Stamps who scored 126 goals in 262 league & cup games between 1939 and 1953, most famously a hat-trick in the 1946 FA Cup Final. Sadly, he lost his sight but was still a regular attendee at home matches where a friend would commentate for him. He died in 1991 at the age of 73.

29th November 2003

Risca & Gelli United v Cwmamman United (Welsh Lge Div 3)

Saturday 30th November 1957

Division III (North)

Gateshead 3 Chester 2

Gate: 3,844

2 points for the Heed but it mattered little as they ended up in 14th, Chester in 21st, and both sides were demoted to the new Fourth Division for 1958/9.
